A few days ago we said that the United States government had given an ultimatum to two Chinese apps to stop operating in that country, Wechat and Tik Tok. The Donald Trump administration has increased pressure on these Chinese companies to prevent them from collecting information from their citizens and being able to share it with the Asian government.
However, both restrictions have been paralyzed.
Tik Tok reaches an agreement, which must be ratified
The most popular case is that of the social network Tik Tok, which after many days of negotiations has reached an agreement with Oracle and Walmart to create a company called Tik Tok Global, as reported in Reuters.
This new company would have a 20% stake in the hands of the two American companies. Of the other 80%, owned by ByteDance, we must also highlight the participation of US investors.
De facto, more than 50% of Tik Tok is now in the hands of American investors so the Trump administration has seen fit to accept the deal. Of course, they have a week to seal it.
Wechat stays in the USA by court order
In case of Wechat It is different since the reason why it has not been removed from the mobile application stores is due to a court decision.
The firm denounced the administration’s decision and a California judge has agreed with them based on the famous first amendment to the United States Constitution, which protects freedom of expression.
It remains to be seen that this movement will come to fruition but, for the moment, American users who will use this messaging app will be able to continue doing so as before.
The entry Tik Tok and WeChat remain, for now, in the Google Play Store in the United States, it appears first in The Free Android.
