The special driving mode begins to reach Google Maps 1

Google Maps is becoming one of the most relevant Google applications. In addition to encompassing site recommendation (managing site recommendation is astonishingly simple and available in Spain) the app maintains its functions as a GPS navigation app.

This feature was going to be improved, as announced at Google IO 2019, with a new interface designed for when we were driving. More than a year has passed and there is still no official announcement, but it is already reaching many users, after it was seen very punctually in some accounts in August.

Substituting Android Auto for driving mode

The chosen users (it seems that it does not depend on a version of the app) will have seen how in the settings of the Google Maps application the one that referred to Android Auto has changed to one that refers to the Driving Mode.

If we have it active, when we start a navigation in the car the application interface will change to show a lower menu with three options:

  • Assistant: here we can interact with the Google assistant, asking questions.
  • Map: This is the main interface, with the map and the layout of our route.
  • Applications: apps that support this mode will appear here, like music or podcasting.

This new interface has not yet been announced but given the number of users who are receiving it in very different phone models, it is very likely that in a few weeks Google will make it official and soon we can all use it.

The entry The special driving mode begins to reach Google Maps appears first in The Free Android.
