Android Wear OS is a miniature version of Android for smartwatches. On a watch with Wear OS you can interact with almost any messaging application, like WhatsApp, through notifications and keeping the mobile synchronized, although with certain limitations. Better is the case of Telegram, which works as a standalone app.
That is, by installing Telegram on a smartwatch with Wear OS, you have a complete messaging app on your wrist, which does not depend on the mobile and in which you can do much more than with the integration based on notifications from other apps. We tell you how Telegram works in Wear OS and everything you can do today.
The version of Telegram for Wear OS is far from new. This messaging app made the leap to smart watches in 2014, when Wear OS was still known like Android Wear. As an application for Wear OS, you can install it directly from Google Play on the clock, as well as “pass” it from the mobile to the clock, if you have Telegram installed on your mobile.
From the watch, you just need open Google Play from the application list and use the search engine to search for Telegram. Then hit Install and wait for it to download. It shouldn’t take long, because the Wear OS version of Telegram takes up a few megabytes.
Telegram works independently on Wear OS, so you will need to log in. The process is practically the same as when you install Telegram on any other platform: you enter your phone number and then you must verify your identity by entering a code that is sent to you by SMS (or in a Telegram chat, if you have it open at the same time on another device).
The version of Telegram for smart watches does not offer everything that is available in Telegram for mobile or PC, but rather a miniature version that nonetheless includes all the basics. For starters, we have three main sections, accessible by swiping the top of the app: chats, contacts and settings.
The most important section is chats, because that’s where you can see all Telegram conversations, including groups and channels, as well as starting a new message. In the message list itself, you can see if any of them have unread messages, as it includes a call sign with the number of pending messages.
Telegram on Wear OS currently has no archived messages, so these messages appear in the list alongside the rest. Similarly, Saved Messages -the conversation with yourself, appears as a chat with your user profile.
The advantage of having a complete application instead of using the Android notification system is that you are not limited to seeing what arrives as notifications, but in chats you can consult other types of content. Thus, in a chat you can see photos, videos -including quick videos- map previews, stickers and even listen to voice memos. At the moment, the little that remains outside of Telegram for Wear OS are the animated stickers, which are not shown.
From the chat section you can consult your conversations in progress and respond quickly with the characteristic tools of Wear OS: using the dictated by voice, drawing emojis or with the tiny virtual keyboard on the screen. By swiping up, you have the ability to attach things to the chat beyond a text response.
You can send stickers, record a voice memo, send a contact, mute a chat and even send a location, although not in real time, as is possible in the full version of Telegram. What is not available in Telegram for Wear OS are calls or video calls, at least for now.
Beyond the conversations, the miniature version of Telegram has room for customization and is that in its settings you can choose from 20 color themes, including a pure black background color theme to save battery life on watches with AMOLED displays.
There are not many adjustments in themselves, although at least there are those necessary to prevent your mobile from vibrating all day: being able to choose if you want to receive notifications of chat messages and notifications of new messages in groups, each with an independent setting.
