Syncing your Gmail contacts with iPhone has never been easier, especially on devices with iOS 10 or later. The following guide shows you how.

How to sync your Google contacts on an iPhone or iPad?

Syncing your Gmail contacts is done in a few steps:

  • First go to Settings on your iPhone or iPad
  • Find Contacts option and tap on it, then enter Accounts
  • Your device will ask you to add a new account, if it is a new iPhone or iPad.
  • Enter your Google email address, then your password.
  • After logging into your Google account, tap Next
  • Google will ask you to authorize your device to manage your contacts, calendar, and access basic profile information. Tap Allow
  • On the screen that appears, make sure the “Contacts” option is enabled.
  • Finally validate the synchronization by pressing “Save”, in the upper right part of the screen

All you have to do is complete the synchronization by opening the Contacts application on your phone. Please note that any modification made to a contact will be saved on other Apple devices with the same identifier. Synchronization on these devices will take place automatically when you enter your username and password.

What to do in case of synchronization error?

In some cases, the synchronization does not succeed even if you follow the steps above correctly. This type of error is usually the result of an incompatibility between the transfer protocols used by your Apple device and Google’s servers. If you have the same problem, here is what to do:

  • Go to Settings on your iPad or iPhone
  • Enter Contacts, then Accounts
  • Choose your Google account and validate
  • First verify that the Mail and Contacts functions are activated.
  • If so, go back to your account and select Advanced Options
  • Next, various parameters will be displayed on your screen, including the choice of transfer protocol for your iPhone or iPad
  • Choose “Use SSL”
  • Then, validate the modification by going back to Account

After this, your device uses the same transfer protocol as Google and most other secure sites.

Your Google contacts are not automatically synced to your iPhone after this change. You need to go back to your phone settings and then add your Google account again.

Why should you sync your Google contacts with an iPhone?

Syncing your Google contacts with an iPhone makes it easy to send and receive your emails right on your phone. You don’t have to fill in the address for each contact every time you need it. Your iPhone will compare the names of your contacts and sync your profile with your email address. This is particularly useful when you use your iPhone to send emails from work or school.
