Goodbye to Android: Huawei will begin the transition to HarmonyOS on December 16 with the Huawei Mate 40

Huawei has been talking about HarmonyOS since the American veto. Although they claimed that they could migrate to said operating system “in a matter of days”, the maturation of this system is taking longer than expected, landing first in the Honor TVs, and announcing plans for arrival to smartphones in 2021.

As reported Gizmochina, Mai Yumin, vice president of Huawei’s software department, has announced that HarmonyOS will arrive in beta at Huawei Mate 40 and its Pro version December 16. The arrival of the new operating system that is so much awaited after the US veto is dated for the first time.

HarmonyOS Beta dated December 16

One of the great software heads at Huawei has announced the arrival of HarmonyOS to mobile. The first to receive the beta will be the Huawei Mate 40, the company’s current high-end, including the Pro model. The plan is gradually replace Android with HarmonyOS, the most relevant movement at the software level that has been seen in many years regarding Android.

HarmonyOS will come to replace Android, but it will be a multiplatform operating system, not only for mobile phones

HarmonyOS is a new platform, with new APIs and that, on paper, would have support for Android applications. Having to do without Google services has accelerated the transition process to this system, which they not only intend to have on mobile phones, but also on computers, televisions, home devices and more.

The roadmap for HarmonyOS and its OpenHarmony platform stated that, as of April 2021, all devices with between 128 MB and 4 GB of RAM would be supported, putting October 2021 as a limit so that all devices were compatible.

Questions are now raised about how will the update process be, what will happen to the current apps and how Huawei has calculated to make such a relevant migration.
