Whatsapp

After having postponed them on a previous occasion, WhatsApp announced on Friday that finally will change its terms of use in May, something that luckily will not affect users in Spain. These weeks have been difficult for the Facebook app, which has lost many users to Signal and Telegram due to the change they announced.

After having postponed their introduction, WhatsApp announced that its new conditions of use will come into force on May 15. Furthermore, it is now confirmed that users will be forced to accept these terms of use. Otherwise they will not be able to use the app.

The new terms of use mean that WhatsApp will share more data with Facebook, the owner of the messaging application. Although among those data that are going to be shared users’ private messages cannot be found, those in which end-to-end encryption is used automatically, but will be the messages that are exchanged with companies.

In addition, it must be remembered that this change in its conditions of use they do not affect users in Spain or in the rest of the European Union. The GDPR, the regulation that exists in Europe on privacy, is responsible for blocking this type of changes, so that Facebook cannot change these privacy conditions in the old continent, nor threaten users with not being able to use the app in case of not accepting.

Users outside of Europe who use WhatsApp will have to accept these changes that take effect on May 15. In case of not accepting them, the application will stop working little by little. Functions will be eliminated, such as being able to exchange text messages with other users or send files, it will not be possible to receive messages on our account either. Calls can be made for a while, but this feature will also be removed after a few weeks.

Therefore, any user outside of Europe will be forced to accept these terms of use on WhatsApp this spring. It is possible that this new attitude of the app cost them more users. These past months we have seen how many have switched to apps like Telegram or Signal, which are more private than the app owned by Facebook.
