WhatsApp puts a limit on the forwarding of messages “so that it remains a place of personal conversation” and not hoaxes

Millions of people are confined in their homes all over the world, in an unprecedented measure to try and curb the advancement of the coronavirus. For this reason, most are turning to platforms like WhatsApp to communicate with our family and friends.

The problem is that many of the messages that we receive could be some sort of spam or could reach desinformarnosin an era in which to be properly informed it is very important.

“Now, more than ever, people need to be able to connect in private”

For this reason, WhatsApp has just announced (via an entry in his blog) a measure with which they want to reduce the amount of times we can forward a message that has gone viral or that (in turn) has been shared many times within the platform.

Surely at some time you’ll have seen a forwarded message that appears next to two gray arrows. That means that “have not been caused by a close contact”, in the words of the company itself.

As we can see, WhatsApp wants to introduce a change for these messages they can only be forwarded to a chat at the same time, and thus prevent the spread with more ease hoaxes or false news.

In its press release, the company makes it clear that forwarding messages is not badand who know that “many users send useful information, funny videos, memes, thoughts and prayers that they find meaningful”.

“However, we have seen a significant increase in the number of referrals that the users have told us that they can also become overwhelming and may contribute to the spread of erroneous information. We believe that it is important to stop the dissemination of these messages to WhatsApp continue to be a place of personal conversation”.

The company concludes by stating that “now, more than ever, people need to be able to connect in private”and that is why from now on is limited to the forwarding of messages that are far from being something personal.
