What to do if Gmail has stopped syncing on Android

Gmail is the most used email application on Android in Spain. A problem that surely many users have faced on occasion is that they do not receive the emails on their phone. There is no notification that we have received one, which can be especially annoying if we are expecting an important email.

If this happens to you, most likely Gmail has stopped syncing on your Android phone. So you do not get the emails that other people are sending to your account. Fortunately, if the application has stopped syncing, we can solve this problem in a number of ways.

Check that Auto Sync is turned on

The most common failure is that the automatic sync option has been disabled, which is the one that ensures that you receive the emails that have been sent to your account on your Android phone. If this function is not active, you will see that the emails do not arrive automatically, but you will have to enter Gmail and update, to see if you have received any messages. Therefore, this is the first thing to check, following these steps:

  1. Open Gmail on Android.
  2. Click on the three horizontal stripes to display the side menu.
  3. Go to Settings.
  4. Click on your email account.
  5. Scroll down to the Data Usage section.
  6. Look for the option to Sync Gmail.
  7. If not, activate this option.

Manual Gmail sync

It may be the case that the automatic synchronization does not work, before which we can force the app to sync, so that the emails will then be displayed normally. It works like automatic synchronization, only that we are the ones who have to do it, following these steps:

  1. Open the phone settings.
  2. Enter Accounts.
  3. Find the Gmail account you use.
  4. Get into it.
  5. Click on the Synchronize option.

Clear Gmail cache

If too much cache accumulates in the application on Android it is possible that it becomes corrupted and thus failures can occur, it is something that happens with many applications in the operating system. In this case, the consequence is that we do not receive the emails that are sent to us automatically, as it should. In this situation, we can always resort to clearing the cache, so that we will receive these emails again normally. The steps to follow are:

  1. Open the phone settings.
  2. Go to Applications.
  3. Search for Gmail.
  4. Get into it.
  5. Go to the storage section.
  6. Tap Clear cache.

Update the app

The origin of this failure in the Gmail synchronization may have to do with what app update needed. It is common that in previous versions of the application errors may end up at some point. If it has started to give you problems, check if there is an update available for it and install it. Most likely it will work normally again.

The opposite can also be the case, that you have installed a new version of Gmail And let these problems with timing begin. In this case, you can go back to a previous version of the application, so that it will work again normally and so that this synchronization works well.

Notifications blocked?

The problem may not be that Gmail has stopped syncing, but that you have made the app cannot issue notifications on the phone, so when you get a new email you don’t know it, because there is no notification. Therefore, it is good to check if you have deactivated, blocked or silenced the notifications of the app. You can check it this way:

  1. Open the Android settings.
  2. Enter Notifications.
  3. Search for Gmail.
  4. Check that you are allowed to send notifications on Android.
  5. If you have silenced them, give them permission to send notifications again.

Power or data saving on

When we use functions such as power saving or mobile data saving On Android, one of the measures taken is to stop the synchronization of messaging and email applications, as is the case with Gmail. That is why if you have any of these two modes activated on your phone, you will not receive these notifications, because you are preventing the application from being able to synchronize automatically as before.

What you have to do is check if any of these modes is activated on the phone. If so, you should deactivate it, unless it is really necessary at that time, because for example the battery is low and you cannot charge the phone.
