What is the Google Drive trash and how to recover your files before they disappear forever

Google Drive is the storage service in the Google cloud, which we can access from Android at all times. For many users in Spain it is known for being the place where backups are kept, whether they are from Android or WhatsApp. The normal thing is that any file that we save remains in it, although there is a trash can.

The files that we have deleted from our Google Drive account remain in this trash. Although many users do not know or know about this trash in the cloud, which is something of importance, especially now that Google has changed the operation of it slightly.

This is how the Google Drive trash works

Until now, the files that were deleted from our account in Google Drive were sent to the trash, where they were kept indefinitely, unless we ourselves delete them from said bin. So in the case of wanting to recover something, it was very easy, since it was enough to enter said trash in the account, to proceed with its recovery. This will still be possible, although we will have to be faster soon.

Google has announced that the files in said trash will now be deleted after 30 days. Therefore, if we delete something and at a certain point we regret it or it was a mistake, and we want to recover it, we have a maximum of 30 days for it. After that time, the file is deleted forever. This is something that will take effect as of October 13, so it is important to keep this change in the trash in mind.

How to use the trash

If you want to delete files in your account in Google Drive, or recover some that you have deleted by accident, you can do it easily at all times, also from your Android phone. Although from October 13 you will have only 30 days in the case of wanting to recover a file from said Trash.Access to the trash is very simple following these steps in the app on Android:

  1. Open Drive.
  2. Click on the three horizontal stripes.
  3. Go to Trash.

If you want to delete a file in your accountThe steps are not complicated either, surely on some occasion you have already done it. We have to do this:

  1. Open Google Drive.
  2. Find the file you want to delete.
  3. Hold down or click on the icon with the three vertical dots next to that file.
  4. Click Remove or the trash can icon.
  5. It is sent to the trash.
  6. If you want to do something with that file, go to the trash.
