We tested the Xiaomi smart heater: hello to home automation, goodbye to cold

Xiaomi has become one of the leading brands in Spain thanks to the great quality-price ratio of its mobiles. However, the company’s ambitions go far beyond selling mobile phones, and although it defines itself as an internet company, its smart devices have great value.

We have spent the last few weeks using Xiaomi’s smart heater, one of the products that has caught our attention the most from the company’s immense catalog and one of the most interesting for its smart features and device performance. Worth?

Xiaomi’s smart heater is ideal for cold winter

As a traditional heater it is a product that is quite good. Its maximum consumption is 2200 W, although it does not always consume this amount of energy, since it automatically regulates its consumption according to the cold in the room. When working at maximum power, it takes a few minutes to heat up the largest room in the house, and in that sense its maximum power is appreciated.

We have two vents, one large and one front.

And another in the back. Each of them has its own air flow, which circulates from the bottom without any type of fan, achieving almost absolute silence in its operation.

We also have a tilting railing, which is at a close yet prudent distance so that we can hang towels or damp clothes and dry them.

At the bottom we have two legs secured by two screws each that provide stability to the heater.

We appreciate a touch panel on the side, plus a physical switch to turn off the power. The touch buttons allow us to access the basic functionalities of the device. From top to bottom, we have the following buttons:

  • Turn the heater on or off: It turns off the heater but is still connected to the power, allowing it to be activated again from the app or through smart home routines.
  • Wifi:Enable or disable wireless connectivity.
  • Temperature:Sets the temperature that the heater will try to reach and maintain in the room.
    • We have for 18, 20, 22, 24, 26 and 28 degrees.
  • Timer:Set a timer to automatically turn off after 1, 3, or 5 hours.

All these touch functions are also found in the mobile application, although in the case of the touch panel it is capable of working without having to use the application or without having to be connected to the internet.

An application adapted to the latest Android and Google Home features

Beyond being a heater, the differential point that Xiaomi contributes is being one more product of its home automation ecosystem. By downloading and installing the Mi Home application, we can control the heater and even block its touch panel so that children cannot change the settings.

The application control is very useful to, for example, start heating the living room when we are not yet at home (although with how quickly it heats up, in the end we have never turned it on like that) but it is also useful to check if we have left it on and thus turn it off when we are not at home.

My favorite part of the app is the automation possibilities it offers. Thanks to the fact that the radiator itself has an environmental thermometer, we can create routines so that it automatically turns on when the room temperature drops below a certain figure, among many other options.

The Xiaomi Home application is also adapted to the latest Android news, being able to have direct accesses in the home automation menu of Android 11, as well as in Xiaomi’s own with MIUI 12 mobiles.

In addition to these integrations, we have integration with the Google assistant, so you can ask your smart speaker to turn on the heater without even having to pick up your mobile.

Very large for heating large rooms or small houses

We have loved the Xiaomi smart heater, but at the same time it has left us wanting more. This model is large and extremely powerful, which makes it great for large rooms, but it turns outtoo powerful for the bedroom, much more for the bathroom. It is capable of perfectly heating a large living room, but also a house that is small.

We really like the speed at which it heats up, how quiet it is and that it doesn’t dry out the environment.

Because of how comfortable the integration between Mi Home with the Google assistant is, we would love to have cheaper versions but with smaller size and power to maintain an optimal temperature in rooms that are too small.
