We tested the new Fire TV interface: surpassing what was already excellent

Amazon does not stop betting heavily with its devices in Spain. Back in September we got to know the new fourth-generation Echos, but also new Fire TV Stick models. The 2020 versions of the Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Stick Lite came with the same design and 50% extra performance at the same price (or 10 euros less in the case of the Lite model, which only varies is the remote control. ).

The performance improvement is not the only privilege of the new generation, and it is that Amazon has presented a new interface for its Fire TV that comes first to these new and affordable models, as we told you a few days ago. We have tested them and these are our impressions.

This is the new Fire TV interface

The new Fire TV interface is starting to roll out and we’ve already had a chance to test it out. It is one of the biggest updates since the Fire TVs exist, focusing on three fundamental aspects: the design, the profiles and our relationship with the content.

This screen is the first thing we see as soon as we turn on the newly updated Fire TV Stick. We find a screen divided into two, having as a central line the menu in which we are. In the lower half we will have recommendations or the contents of each section, while in the upper half there will be featured trailers.

Just press up or down so that the dividing line goes to a point where it does not get in the way and leaves most of the screen for the highlighted section. If we click up, the trailers of outstanding productions appear.

The trailers of said content do not have to do with the subscriptions we have on the device, in my case it recommends movies from Prime Video, Movistar +, Netflix, Orange TV and FlixOlé (without me being subscribed to all these platforms). These trailers are only an invitation to know content, and will finally be opened in their corresponding application (requiring their corresponding subscription).

Among its multiple options, we maintain the sectionLive, which allows us to watch live television channels from applications such as RTVE, Atres Player or Pluto TV. It also offers us access to live Twitch TV channels.

The application menu that we find on the main screen offers us direct access to up to 5 applications, the rest being hidden. Within this menu we can order them, leaving the first 5 on the home screen.

Content search

Search is one of the sections that Amazon boasts in its new interface. When entering this, we will have the possibility to search by keyboard or with voice by Alexa, but we can also go directly to any of the sections.

When selecting humor, for example, humor content from various streaming platforms will appear.

The same happens with movies, where we appreciate content for free or available for purchase or rent, as if it were a video store. Again, we appreciate a header with featured content from any platform.

Profiles for the whole family

But without a doubt, one of the key factors of the new Fire TV update is the inclusion of profiles. You can createup to six profiles, each with their name and personalized avatar (among the available options).

Although at the time of creating a profile, it receives the pre-installed applications, having the same session started in these. Otherwise, the profiles are independent and each one can install their own applications.

In addition to the applications, the personalized recommendations will be linked to your profile, so if your children succumb to a Peppa Pig marathon in the profile created for them, you will not have to live with the recommendations based on their views (unless you really want).

An update that enhances a Fire TV that was already round

Right now, the new Fire TV interface is starting to roll out on the 2020 Fire Stick TV and Fire Stick TV Lite. This update is starting to roll out through a progressive rollout, so if you already have one of these devices you may have to wait several days to receive the new interface.

If, on the contrary, the new Fire Sticks attracted attention but you were still undecided, they are still on sale for Christmas, being at 20 euros the most Lite and 30 euros the normal model. Both are excellent devices to turn your old FullHD television into a smart TV.

Amazon Fire TV Stick:

  • Lite version for 19.99 euros.
  • Standard version for 29.99 euros.
