Use a QR to connect to the WiFi without knowing the password

There are options to connect to the Internet in a house without having to know the password, how to use an NFC tag. But it can also be especially useful via a QR code. If you have visitors at home, you will not need to dictate a long password to each person who arrives to connect, but it will be enough to place a visible QR code that that person will scan with their phone and automatically connect so as not to waste data. You can do it with the main network or you can create a specific guest network but we explain how to generate or how to connect to WiFi through a QR code.

There are two logical steps that we must follow for this: generate the QR code with the data of the WiFi network that interests us. And scan it once someone arrives and wants to connect from their mobile phone or tablet or any other device.

Generate a QR with the WiFi

The first thing we have to do to connect to a WiFi network with a QR code is to generate the code with the corresponding configuration. There are many websites or tools that allow us to do it both from the mobile phone and from the computer’s browser and then use the code as you want. We can print it, make stickers or simply carry it on the smartphone for when someone asks us to show it on the screen and allow them to scan it.

QR Generator

One of the most recommended options to create a QR code is to do it with the QR Code Generator website because it allows you to create it for free, without complications and from any browser that we have installed. It is a website that allows you to do it from the phone or from the computer and we simply have to fill in the fields.

You do not have to create it manually but choose the section “WIFI” and the different boxes that we can fill in with the information will appear. In this case, they will be simply:

  • Network name
  • Password
  • Encryption (None – WPA / WPA2 – WEP)

Once you have it, simply tap on “Create QR code” and the image will be generated automatically. Here we have a series of new customization options that allow us, for example, to add a frame to the image we are creating … We can, for example, put it in Polaroid format. Or you can add a logo of your company (in case of being free WiFi in a bar, for example) or even modify the colors so that it is not the classic and boring black.

When you have created the image you can do whatever you want with it, as we have said before. You can print it, place it on a magnet on the fridge, put it in a frame in the living room … Of course, you must create a different QR in case of changing the name of the network or if you ever change the password.

QR Stuff

It is not the only website and there are others, such as QR Stuff, that allow us all kinds of labels or codes. Here we can create one for profiles on social networks, email addresses or as a business card. But we can also create one to connect to WiFi. We simply have to choose the label corresponding option in the options menu that appears on the web page.

The content that we have to fill in on this page is similar to the previous one: we have to fill in the SSID or network name, password and security type.

The difference with other websites is that we not only create with a series of data but we can also customize it to the maximum: we can choose the size and resolution of the code, the color we want it to have, but also if we want rounded corners or not or what shades we want there to be inside it. Finally, you choose the type of file you want (png, svg …) and decide if you want to add a logo or an image for the QR code, beyond having the WiFi data. Finally, you simply have to create or print it from the web itself. It is a more complete and more customizable option.

Qifi.org

If you are looking for an option very simple and fast To create the QR code with the WiFi data, this page is the best option because there is nothing beyond the fields that we fill in. The advantage is that it is basic for those who do not want to complicate doing this process. The downside is that it does not allow us to personalize like the previous one: you cannot choose colors or borders or anything else except filling in the data.

Like the previous ones, you simply have to fill in the SSID or name of the WiFi network to which you want to give access along with the password you have at home. You can also choose the type of security it has (normally it will be WPA / WPA2). When you’re done, just tap on “Generate!” and you will have the image of the code.

Scan

Once you have created the code with the data, just scan it when someone arrives. You can place it anywhere you can think of … The logical or basic thing is to print it on a small paper that we can stick in the hall closet, in the guest room, on a furniture in the living room at the bottom. Or even stick it on the router itself at the bottom, for example. Once someone arrives, simply take out your scan app and put the phone’s camera over the QR code so that it automatically connects to the WiFi without entering a password. Most phones include this option from the camera itself of the mobile without having to install anything else but there are also apps or websites that allow us.

We read the code and generally we will find an option that tells us, in Android, “Join the network.” You tap on this button and you will connect.

Pages to scan QR

If the person who visits you, or yourself, wants to scan a code and does not want to install an app or find how to do it with the camera, there are pages. Free pages that give us two different options: access the mobile camera’s permissions to focus the code and take us to where it tells us or to websites where we have to upload a photo taken previously and that also fulfill their mission.

Codes-qr.com is an option for those looking for the latter: you take a picture of the WiFi code and you upload it to the web. It will automatically take you to the landing page or what interests us: connect to the wireless network. We just have to go to “Browser your QR”And your gallery will automatically open, where you will have to search for the photo you want from the mobile images.

Another alternative is webQR It allows both uploading a photo or giving access to the camera so we can choose. Scan the code and it will connect directly.

Applications

There are also many applications that allow us to scan. Some are specific to this and some are not, as is the case with Twitter. The specific ones are available for free in the application stores and you will find many just by searching for “qr scanner” or similar. We give permission to the camera, we focus on the box that appears on the screen and the data is automatically recorded.

The most recommended is to use Google Lens, for example, the Google app that allows us to recognize objects or reverse search in the search engine. You can count calories, find information … and scan QR.
