Tigers, sharks and other animals in 3D with augmented reality: how it is done, what animals there are and what you need

In the Google I/O last year Google taught us how wore the augmented reality to their searches: certain objects and animals can be displayed in 3D in your room with the help of the augmented reality technology of Google. Best of all is that it is as easy as doing a Google search.

In this way, you can make photos with animals 3D directly from the app of Google and with the advantage that the animal is attempting to represent a real life scale. It is a fun way to pass the time, although you need certain requirements to be able to use this function. Here we will tell you what animals are available and what you need to see them.

What you need to view animals in 3D in Google

The animal in 3D (left) you can see that on almost any mobile device. With augmented reality (right), in those with support for ARCore

First of all, we must distinguish between what we mean to view animals in 3D. This is because Google has two ways to do this: as a 3D object on a white background, and integrated in the background using augmented reality.

In virtually any Android device with a recent browser you can see the animals in 3D, but to see them with augmented reality you will need to have Services installed from Google Play RA, formerly known as ARCore. You can download from Google Play:

Services Google Play RA

You need, therefore, that your mobile phone is compatible with the augmented reality of Google. You can find the list of supported mobile with ARCore here. If your phone is not, keep in mind that Google includes new models periodically. For example, a week ago added more than 20 models.

What animals are available

There is not a complete list, so you’ll have to test until you see a section like this

Google has not released a full list of what animals are available, although through trial and error we can find a good amount of them. The easiest way to check to see if your favorite animal is included is to do a Google search and see if it appears you box relevant. These are some of the animals available:

  • Eagle
  • Alligator
  • Horse
  • Goat
  • Cat
  • Cheetah
  • Labrador
  • Leon
  • Wolf
  • Hedgehog
  • Bear
  • Panda bear
  • Pug
  • Duck
  • Dog
  • Penguin
  • Pony
  • Octopus
  • Rottweiler
  • Snake
  • Shark
  • Tiger
  • Turtle

How to make photos with the animals in 3D

If you’re interested in trying these animals in 3D from the Google search, remember that you will need to have installed Google Services of RA on your mobile. After, do a search on Google of the animal that you are interested in. Scroll through the results until you see a special box with a preview of the animal in 3D and the button To watch in 3D.

That button will appear both in the mobile compatible with ARCore as in those who do not, because first, it shows the 3D model of the animal on a white background. The difference is that in the mobile ARCore, there is a button below the same: See in your space. The first time you press you will receive a window with information and you’ll need to grant permission for the camera and the access to the storage.

It will then display the image from the camera of your mobile, as well as the indications of that move the phone in circles while pointing to the ground so that it can detect it correctly and put the animal where you want it.

And already, you have your animal (or other objects, as is also possible, for example with planets), which is built in your room with augmented reality. By touching the shutter-release button is a photo that is saved in the gallery of mobile. Playing in the animal’s can move through the scene, rotate and scale it.
