Three things to consider if you are going to stop using Google Photos

Every day there is technology news that we echo, but it rarely affects, potentially, as many people as the one that caused the Google announcement yesterday related to Google Photos.

After five years in which it has become the benchmark for storing the images we make with our mobiles (and sometimes even with our cameras), the company has decided to pay for the service, beyond the initial 15 GB which, with luckily, they serve us to keep photos of one or two years.

But, before rushing to switch services online, there are a few things to consider.

There’s still time before Google Photos changes

While we can get angry with Google, it is acceptable to admit that, at least, they have not acted without warning. Will be the June 1, 2021 when the space we have in our Google account is used to store all our photos.

Until then, many things can happen, from the company rectifying until other companies seek to gain a foothold in this newly opened market segment.

An example is Amazon Photos, which is one of the best alternatives, at least for photos, not so much for videos. We will have to wait to see if Google’s movement has a response in Amazon in the coming months, both to improve its proposal and to eliminate the mode included in Amazon Prime.

Study if it is worth paying

The second thing we have to consider is whether it is worth paying to store our photos online. The question is not whether or not to make a punctual payment, but to pay every month, 2, 3, 10 or whatever euros.

Never rule out being able to make backup copies to physical devices such as DVD, a NAS, a hard drive or a pen drive. Or several, of course.

Always duplicate your backups

Yesterday afternoon I saw how many of those who complained about the modification of the conditions of Google Photos did so because they had moved their entire library there.

It is not a problem to store your photos in a service that says it is unlimited, but to do it only in that service. Always it is a good idea to save the information in at least two placesBe it two online services, two hard drives, or a mix of them.
