Youtube

Short videos are in fashion and we see them on all social networks and platforms … They are on Instagram with the Reels and they were previously on TikTok. They are barely a minute long and stitch together several different clips into a single creation. Now YouTube does the same with YouTube Shorts, your tool for short films.

YouTube Shorts is, for now, in version beta. In August 2021 the tool is in the testing phase, but it is soon expected to be global and available “to creators around the world” who use the app. There is nothing specific to download Instead, in the YouTube application for mobile phones we will now see an icon at the bottom where we see “YouTube Shorts”.

What is YouTube Shorts?

YouTube Shorts is a video platform tool that allows you to create and view short films. It allows creators to make short videos from their smartphone and with YouTube’s own application without the need for any professional or specific equipment. With the own tools that Shorts offer, these shorts can be created to “connect with new audiences”.

Follow the format of other platforms such as Instagram or TikTok to short videos with various segments which can be recorded separately and then displayed all in a row with effects and filters. It allows you to create short videos of up to 60 seconds each.

The format is identical to TikTok and Instagram with its Reels. We simply have to go to the YouTube Shorts section at the bottom of the app, tapping on the corresponding icon. This will open a video of the platform on the main screen uploaded by another user. We can like or dislike, we can comment or we can share. If we slide up, we see another. With this system of swiping up we are going to see the different identical videos than in other similar platforms and even with “repeated” content since we will see the TikTok watermark in many of these short films uploaded to the Google app.

Where is available

It is not available in all countries but from YouTube they explain: In a phased manner, we are going to make the YouTube Shorts creation tools available to more users around the world in the YouTube application.

In order to have the function available, in case of not seeing it, we must update the YouTube application to the latest version available on the mobile phone or tablet.

How to record a short

To record a short we have to have the function activated in the app. The first thing we must do is update it, as we have explained in previous paragraphs. Once you have new versions and it is compatible, we will see a row of new icons appear at the bottom. Among these icons we will see “YouTube Shorts” in second position, but it will not be here where we must touch to create a new video but we must go to the “+”, the button right in the center. As you can see in the screenshot, we can touch the central button and three options will appear:

  • Upload a video
  • Create a short
  • Broadcast live

The second, of course, is the one that interests us. We have to log into YouTube using our Google account if we have not done so before. Once we have it, we give access to the application to open camera and microphone if the permissions were not previously given. And you can start recording.

Here a screen will open with different options. We can touch the central red button to record. And we have a series of settings: speed, timer or a button in which we can change from rear camera to front camera and vice versa.

If you have used Reels or TikTok, is identical. You simply have to press the red button to create the different clips. Clips or videos can be fifteen seconds each. In total, all together, they cannot exceed sixty seconds. In the upper right we can choose the speed between several options: from 0.3x to x3 as you want slow motion or fast motion. And also from this part of the screen you can activate or deactivate the timer to avoid having to use your hands when you want to record. You can activate a countdown of three, ten or twenty seconds and a drop-down menu allows us to choose how long you want it to record.

At the top of the screen we can add music. There are a number of songs or titles available to add at no cost and the theme is varied, of all kinds. We can explore, search the top of the most used songs or we can go to the “favorites” section where we can have some registered songs.

Music

We can also add different clips that we already have in the gallery. Just tap on the bottom left corner of the phone app. You can choose videos that you have previously recorded or even use creations from TikTok or Reels to upload directly to YouTube Shorts without having to create new ones.

Once we have something done, we simply have to touch the “check” icon and we can add the last details. You can adjust the music so that the piece of song you want is heard. Also here we can add all kinds of text in different colors and with different formats. And finally, you can add different filters on the video that you have already created to give it a creative touch.

Finally we can add a title with a maximum of 100 characters and upload it.

See other short films

The idea of these shorts is to discover creators or expand the audience. Even if you are not youtubers, you can take advantage of this tool if you are good at short clips, dances, etc. To see videos of other users we simply must go to “YouTube shorts” in the lower menu of the app and we can slide up to see all of them. If any of the creators interests us, click on “subscribe“So that they always appear in your subscriptions tab or if you want to receive notifications when there are contents new that we want to always have controlled.

Youtube

We can also use the “share” button to send them to other social networks or share them in messaging applications such as WhatsApp or Telegram if we want to show the short film to friends or acquaintances.
