Android Auto version 5.8 is beginning its deployment, and although it apparently does not include great news, it does hide some secrets that XDA Developers have managed to unravel.

The ability to customize the Android Auto launcher with Google Assistant shortcuts is one of the features revealed. It was already revealed in the code of previous versions, but at that time they were only references and in the latest version it is already a functional feature. Hidden, but functional.
The shortcuts would be found within the option to customize the launcher, and would allow us to create custom commands, such as calling a person or any command from the Google assistant. In this way, we could use voice assistant commands without having to say them, simply by pressing a button on the touch screen. Another feature that is yet to come in the next versions is the ability to change the Android Auto wallpaper, as if it were just another Android launcher. The arrival date of these two features is still unknown, and while the launch of the Google Assistant custom actions seems imminent, the possibility of changing the wallpaper could be several weeks from its deployment.
