Google Meet was one of the 2020 apps in Spain, which is also free for everyone until March, after Google has extended this period. The company seeks that this application remains one of the benchmark apps for video calls and now introduces a series of functions in it, with which to differentiate itself from the competition.

Google Meet has already introduced functions such as noise cancellation or real-time subtitles in Spain. The application now leaves us with improvements aimed mainly at education, such as reactions with emojis, more control tools or the automatic transcription of meetings. So it will continue to improve this year.

These are the improvements to Google Meet for 2021

One of the main novelties that Google Meet introduces are the reactions with emojis, which will arrive sometime this year. Users who participate in a video call can send a reaction using an emoji, so that other participants can see it, but without it being a distraction. In addition, call managers can decide when reactions can be sent.

The application is clearly oriented to the educational environment this year, with many of its functions aimed at this field. Teachers will have a greater number of control tools available to manage these video calls that are held in it. Among the functions we find:

  • Mute all meeting participants easily.
  • Control when students can reactivate their microphones.
  • Access to the moderation tools in all versions of the app (Android, iOS and desktop).
  • Share screen from mobile.
  • Control which people connect to a call from a school.
  • Automatic meeting transcription that teachers and educators will receive at the end of a meeting. The content can then be shared with other users who have not been in the meeting.

Google Meet also seeks to improve quality of video calls on bad connections. It is expected that the platform will be updated in the coming months to help it perform better even in connections with reduced bandwidth. It will also work better on Chromebooks with various performance, audio and video improvements.

All these improvements will arrive throughout this year to the application in all its versions, although no dates have been given at the moment. They will be gradually deployed in the coming months.
