The detection of eyes wide open hits to the face unlock of the Pixel 4 six months after its launch

As brand tradition, Google announced the latest generation of the family Pixel last fall, specifically on October 15. Among the novelties of the Pixel 4 was the new face unlock that, quite the Apple style, it is the only method of unlocking biometric on the device, turning away so the fingerprint reader.

As we saw in the analysis of the Pixel 4 XLthe face unlock is very fast, but has a rather serious problem: allows the unlocking of the terminal even if we have the eyes closed. This just changed with the arrival of Android 11 Developer Preview 2..

The face unlock of the Pixel 4 is finally safe

Google dedicated a good part of the presentation of their Pixel detail so fast and accurate that it was the new face unlock, which we recall is the only method to unlock biometric in the terminal. How quickly we have not had any complaints, but that a system that employs biometrics does not provide a detail as the user to have the eyes open to be able to authenticate it does not make much sense. No matter how fast or accurate it may be, if we are asleep and someone on the phone to our face, you can access it.

Google said it would solve this problem “in the coming months,” and so it has been, six months to be exact is what I have been slow to offer this option. However, it should be noted that this is not going to be able to enjoy all of the users because it is one of the novelties included in the second beta of Android 11targeted to developers (although you can install if you have a Pixel 4).

We already have installed and we have verified that, indeed, in the section Security – face Unlock, there is a new option called ‘eyes must be open’ and does just what it says: if we try to unlock the mobile by having the eyes closed, does not work. Personally I think this option should have been implemented from the start, and that there was no alternative with eyes closed, but well, I guess better late than never.
