The dark theme comes to Google Maps for Android: so you can activate it

A few days ago, Google gave us a preview of the new features that will arrive throughout this spring to our Android devices. Of all of them, in addition to password verification, scheduled messages and TalkBack, there is one that stands out especially because we have been waiting for it for a long time: the dark theme of Google Maps.

And it is that, although it has been months that Google Maps for Android began to deploy in a limited and gradual way this function, is now when is officially available for everyone. Here’s how to activate it in just three steps.

How to activate the dark theme in Google Maps

Until now, Google Maps only had the dark theme in navigation mode, but finally, now we can have it in all its interface. And what is even better, it is possible to choose if we want to “darken” Maps permanently or only when that dark theme is activated throughout the device.

The procedure to activate it is very simple, just follow the following steps:

  • Once the Google Maps app is open, tap on the icon or photo of your account in the upper right corner.

  • Go into ‘Settings’ to access the application settings.

  • Click on the section ‘Topic’.

  • Three options will be displayed: ‘Always show in clear theme’, ‘Always show in dark theme’ or ‘Use the same theme as the device’.

  • Select the one you prefer and click on ‘Save’.

If you choose the second option, you will have the default dark theme whenever you use the Google Maps app; if you opt for the latter, it will alternate between light and dark theme depending on the system theme. In any case, you will see how the new dark theme of Google Maps tints its entire interface in gray tones, including the maps.
