How can we know if that file that we just send by email or that we’ve downloaded from some web page is insurance or not without opening it? In some cases, we will have in our team some tool anti-malware with real time protection that, directly, it will block your download or its execution.
But that option will not always be available (the computer may not be ours, or be too old, or…), and we will have to find a way to analyze the file in question. Fortunately, there are many antivirus online that we will facilitate that task.
We have selected some of the highlights:
Virustotal
Possibly Virustotal it the web service more popular in this category; it contributes to that which was acquired 8 years ago by Google, and win all your rivals in the aspects such as the speed, the number of antivirus engines used or the alternatives available to you to send the files to their servers.
Such a submission may be made up the file of our interest (550 Mb) via the web, by attaching it in a e-mail (and sending it to [email protected]), using extensions to the browser or applications mobile or desktop.
Once on the servers of Virustotal, the file will be analyzed by a total of 58 different anti-virus enginesand inform us in the ‘diagnosis’ of each of them. In addition, the tool provides us with extra data on the malicious file (metadata, hash, other names with which it would normally appear, the first time it was reported, etc.), as well as feedback from the community.
It is worth noting, finally, that we can also refer to the platform the reliability of a URL or IP addressand not just specific files.
MetaDefender Cloud
One of the main alternative to Virustotal it is MetaDefender Clouda platform with very similar roles: it allows us to send files (up to 140 Mb), and URLs through the web, to be subjected to analysis by 40 antivirus engines different. Its detection rate is clearly lower than that of the tool of Google, yes.
It lacks an option that allows us to send files by mail, and does not offer extensions for the browser, but to change us access to the API to display in our application information the consultations on the files.
Kaspersky VirusDesk
Kaspersky VirusDeskunlike the rest of the tools in this list, does not provide us with access to multiple antivirus engines: you just need to use the engine of the antivirus desktop namesakeone of the most reputable in the industry.
As in previous years, the web tool will give us the option to upload the file directly, or to paste a URL in the form. Unfortunately, it is short on information: despite having tried to analyze a file of fake malware that takes years to be used for these tests, the platform was restricted to indicate that it had detected a threat in the ZIP file that we had climbed, and to ask permission to send it to your anti-Virus Lab to analyze in more detail.
Other alternatives

Hybrid Analysis: Hybrid Analysis allows you to query simultaneously Metadefender and Virustotal. The negative point is that it requires more clicks than their opponents for lelgar to the results (first ask us to fill in a captcha and ease of our mail -optional – and then choose which virtual machine performs the analysis).
