Samsung explains how Smart-ISO Pro works, its new HDR technology

With the arrival of the new Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra a new camera sensor arrived, the ISOCELL HM3. One of the main improvements in this sensor it has to do with the ISO treatment, one of the key points in Samsung’s HDR. The company has detailed how this HDR works, through Smart ISO Pro, the name they give to this image treatment.

The summary is that different ISO values are combined to expand the dynamic range of photos, but the explanation goes further. We are going to tell you how they get such a complete HDR and the steps they had to take to get there.

Smart ISO Pro: Samsung’s technology to improve dynamic range

Samsung has explained how your new Smart ISO Pro technology works, a renovation on the basis that they already used. We are going to try to explain it in the simplest way possible, although the first thing we have to know is what is ISO (or at least, an ISO level).

The lower the ISO, the lower the sensitivity to light, the higher the higher. Samsung combines two ISO inputs (high and low) to obtain a greater dynamic range

ISO level indicates the sensitivity of the sensor to light. If the value is low (for example, ISO 100), the sensor will be less sensitive to light, and if the value is high (for example, ISO 3200), more sensitive. This ‘sensitivity’ is possible as the ISO values are precisely what adjusts how the light signal reaches a sensor.

In the case of Samsung, its sensor has two interpretations for the ISO, one for the low ISO and one for the high ISO, to regulate the entry of light into the sensor through two channels. That is, when we take a photograph, Smart ISO Pro takes both the high ISO and the low ISO reading, to combine the information of both.

Aside from capturing a large dynamic range due to the combination of high and low ISO values, the new sensor with Smart-ISO Pro has a 12-bit color depth, allowing you to reproduce more colors than sensors with depths of 8 and 10 bits.
