Retouch the images in your document without leaving Word

Word has all kinds of options to edit documents, but also the images that we upload. The normal thing is to edit it before adding it to a document but we can also do it later, once it is already in it and without exiting the program. It won’t give us as many options as a professional retouching software, but there are many tools that the Microsoft text suite offers us.

In the next few paragraphs we will explain how to cut, add frames or change some details such as the color, contrast or brightness of an image included in a Word document without using third-party applications. This may vary depending on the specific version you have of the editor but practically any current version will give us the oImage design options in the menu at the top.

Settings and effects

The first thing we have to do is upload an image by tapping on “Insert” or go to a document that already has the image uploaded. This will bring up a new tab at the top of the menu: Imaging tools. Where we can change all kinds of options such as the frame, the color or the different corrections that we want to make, although keep in mind that, as we have said before, there are not as many possibilities as if you use Photoshop first and then Word.

  • Remove background

The first thing we see in the menu at the top of the web is “remove background”In the top bar, on the left. This, as its name suggests, will allow us to eliminate the background of any image that we upload to Word. It is especially interesting if we want to have a silhouette or if it is a specific drawing with a plain background. In case of a photography It will be much more complicated, but a drawing will be quick and easy. In addition, it gives us several options such as mark areas manually that we want to keep, mark the areas that we want to remove, etc.

  • Corrections

The second thing we see when making changes to the image is the “Corrections” section. It is the closest thing to a photo editor that Word allows us. We can choose predefined filters thatadjust brightness, contrast, or sharpness. But we can also open a drop-down menu on the right side of the screen that allows us to access a slider where we adjust sharpness, brightness and contrast through a bar or the exact percentage. We can go testing until we see that the finish of the photograph that we edit with Word is the one that interests us.

  • Colour

The third thing we find in this photo editing bar is “Colour”. We can choose that the image is fully blue, red, gray, green. We can also choose the tones or modify the saturation. In the options box we will see how it would look in each case, although we can also go to “more variations” to choose from more options available to edit the photo.

As in the previous case, we can also open a drop-down menu on the right side and it will allow us access a slider where we can choose saturation and temperature through the percentage or level that interests us.

  • Artistic effects

Although you use them on Instagram and other photo apps, it is a way to edit images in Word. At the top we will see “Artistic effects” and we can click on this option to open a menu where we will see the thumbnail of our image and how it would look by adding each of the available filters. They do not give a realistic look to the photo in most cases but they are an option if you want to convert it to black and white, for example, or turn it into a kind of canvas or a painting.

Format and size

We can also resize, compress or add frames.

  • Compress images

One of the options that Word allows us is to compress images. We can choose four options:

    • 220ppi printing
    • Display at 150 ppi
    • Email with 96 ppi
    • Use document resolution

It will also allow us to apply it to only one or all of those that we have in the document.

  • Picture outline and frames

At the top we can also access the section of shapes and frames that will make the photograph of the document or image have a black or white frame around it or change shape by betting on an oval, circles, etc. We can add a frame to the image that we want of all that are available.

The outline of the image allows us to choose a thickness and a color and will make the photograph look, as its name suggests, contoured. You can add an edge of the tone you want to the image you have in the document. We can choose to be a continuous line or a dashed line formed by dashes. In addition, it allows you to choose the distance between them or the thickness of the aforementioned line. Also the color.

  • Image Effects

You can add shadows, glow effect, reflection, soft edges, bezels, or 3D twist. Each one of the options in the “image effects” section allows us various customizations. For example, the shadow allows us to choose the intensity or you can decide if you want it to be an inner shadow or an outer shadow, with perspective, etc. You can try as many times as you want or change the color, intensity, etc.

  • Image design

The last option that Word allows us is to choose a design different from the picture or if there is a set of them. We can choose that the text is on one side as a title or we can choose that there is a collage with several photographs with texts next to it, one on top of the other, forming a diagram …

Position and adjust

One of the classic options that Word has always had is to change image position or format adjusting it to the text. It is not a retouch as such of the image but what allows us to decide if we want it to be on one side, on the other, in the center.

  • Fit style

The layout or image adjustment options are:

    • In line with the text
    • Square
    • Close
    • Transparent
    • Up and down
    • Behind the text
    • In front of the text

Have several options for text wrapping:

    • Both sides
    • Left only
    • Just right
    • Only the eldest

And at the bottom we can choose the exact centimeters of distance of the text above, below or in the margins to the left and right.

  • Position

Another option that Word allows us is to choose the exact position of the image. We can choose vertically or horizontally. All the settings and the exact position in the text, in the column or in relation to other elements on the same page.

    • Alignment
    • Book design
    • Absolute position
    • Relative position
    • In relation to…
    • From…
    • To the right of…
    • In relation to…

Also other options that we can mark or unmark such as move object with text, allow overlaps, lock delimiter, table cell layout.
