Realme 7 5G analysis: its greatest virtue is the battery

Realme has faced the final stretch of the year with the launch of what is its cheapest 5G mobile, the realme 7 5G, a terminal that has in this characteristic one of the few differences with its younger brother, the realme 7.

The reality is that there are also changes in the processor or the refresh rate, but in essence we are facing the mobile we knew, but with 5G.

Plastic materials with good back design

When it comes to saving costs we have seen how realme does not hesitate to change materials, making them cheaper. We already said it in the review of the new realme Air Buds Pro headphones and the same thing happens with the realme 7 5G.

This terminal is committed to plastic finishes both in the rear area and in the frames, giving an economical mobile feeling.

The build isn’t bad, and the ergonomics are pretty slick. In addition, the rear design is quite curious and provides an elegant touch, although here the taste of each one always comes into play.

Besides the presence of the headphone jack, the only thing that stands out is the side fingerprint sensor, which is located on the power button. And be careful, because I always complain about the position of the sensor when it is on the side, but this time there are two reasons why this is not the case.

The first is the height of the edge at which it is and the second that is able to identify the finger of the left hand. These are two things that make this reader not a problem at all.

Good performance with limitations

This is the first mobile that we analyzed that uses the Mediatek Dimensity 800U processor. This chipset has been designed to offer good performance and, above all, 5G connectivity at reasonable prices.

And that is the hallmark of this model, 5G. We have not been able to test it because the area in which we have moved does not have coverage, despite the fact that the operator used in the tests does offer this connectivity. That makes it clear to you the relevance of this parameter in many cases, at least in Spain.

Beyond being the cheapest 5G mobile of the moment, the processor performance is good, allowing the use of games like Honkai Impact Third or Genshin Impact with an important condition: the graphics are almost to a minimum, and it shows.

Obviously we can change this manually, but performance is already suffering.

The 6 GB RAM memory does the work necessary to be able to use the apps fluently, and the 128 GB of internal memory seems sufficient, especially since we can expand it with microSD cards, which are placed in one of the three slots of the mobile. The other two are for SIMs.

To 5G we have to add the NFC or the headphone jack. Of course, the fact that this mobile has a single speaker we did not like since it is easy to block the audio output when playing.

A screen with a high refresh rate but a mid-range

If realme had launched the realme 7 5G as a realme 7 with better connectivity we would not have been surprised. Well yes, you should change the processor as you have done, but little else.

However, it has decided to improve some of its features, and the refresh rate of the screen is the most striking. We went from maximum 90 Hz to 120 Hz, but this is not as big a jump as the figures suggest. For two reasons.

For starters, the jump from 60 to 90 Hz is much higher in perception than from 90 to 120. Also, as this is an LCD screen and not OLED, the feeling of fluidity is not the same.

Yes, it looks faster, with better animations, but this should not be a reason to buy this mobile, or any other. The maximum brightness is 480 nits, a correct figure for the price range in which we operate.

Beyond that characteristic, we have to emphasize that although we can saturate the colors, the panel comes from the factory with neutral tones.

Of course, it is striking, especially when we are using a white background, that the perforation of the camera seems to have some shadow, like a halo around the circle. It is not a problem in use or in everyday life, but aesthetically it does not look good.

Four cameras, two of them relevant

Like the vast majority of 2020 terminals, the realme 7 5G opts for a camera configuration that includes four sensors on the back. Two of them are almost useless, both 2MP, one for macro mode and one for black and white photos.

The other two sensors are the important ones, a main one of 48 Mpx and another wide angle of 8 Mpx.

The quality of the photos is uneven since although during the day we achieve very decent shots, with good dynamic range and a successful HDR, at night the quality drops a lot.

With the wide angle we also have the problem that its low resolution means that we can barely enlarge before we start to see the loss of detail.

In addition, although the interface encourages us to take photos with a 2X zoom, this is digital, and the truth is that the quality has nothing to do with what is achieved with an optical zoom.

Better stabilization is missing in video recording, and not only at night, but also during the day.

The realme 7 5G battery is the star of the function

Of this mobile we could highlight the 30W fast charge that it has, something that is not seen in this price range normally. But even that is overshadowed by its autonomy. It is spectacular.

In the first test battery we have left the refresh rate of the screen in automatic mode. We have played, we have taken photos and videos and we have listened to podcasts. We have reached 10 hours of screen with 35 hours of battery.

In the second test On battery power, we’ve set the panel refresh rate to 120Hz. Despite that, since we’ve been playing Genshin Impact and HearthStone quite a bit, we’ve had impressive numbers. We have reached 9 hours of screen with 28 hours of battery.

In the third test of battery we have tried to see how much is the maximum autonomy that this mobile can give us. For this we have used the screen at 60 Hz. The rest of the parameters are identical. We have reached 10 hours of screen with 40 hours of battery.

The realme 7 5G continues to boast of interface

As we have seen in other models, this terminal continues to bet on a clean interface, realme UI, the layer that the manufacturer has designed to run on top of Android 10, instead of using Color OS, the OPPO interface.

And we couldn’t be happier.

We can modify parameters such as the screen refresh rate, even putting it in automatic mode. We can control the response of games with a specific mode.

Facial unlocking is fast and the interface animations are not slow, something that is appreciated since although this is not a low range, it is not expensive either.

Conclusion: 5G is not that important

At the end of 2020 it is still difficult to recommend a mobile simply because it has 5G. It is true that this model brings something more to its predecessor than the best connectivity, but it is also more expensive.

The official price is 279 euros, although we have seen it at 229 euros on sale. This puts it in the orbit of two very competent terminals, the Xiaomi Mi 10T Lite if we want 5G and I the Poco X3 NFC if the latest technology in connectivity does not matter to us.

If when we talk about the high-end we usually say that 5G is not a priority, in the entry or mid-range that is accentuated. Of course, if for us having 5G is important, because we use it or because we do not want to change mobile phones in the short term, you will not find any cheaper than this.
