The launch of Chrome 89 in March brought with it some interesting news for users, such as the reading list. This function of the new version of the Google browser that, although it seems similar, is not the same as the bookmarks option. Here we will learn What is it the new Google Chrome reading list and how can you use it.
We all remember that the Google Chrome browser was quite basic a couple of years ago. To make the navigation richer and more complete, it was almost always necessary to resort to certain extensions, since by default there was not much to choose from. But since then, Google has put the batteries and have been introducing functions that have made Chrome the clear reference of the moment.
Some of these options are not always to the liking of the user. However, it is clear that those responsible for sailing are paying attention to details that were previously ignored. Thus, with the arrival of the version Chrome 89, new features have appeared to take into account.
One of them is the reading list, an alternative function to the bookmarks of a lifetime, which allows us to read pages at a later time if we wish. As you read this, you will think precisely that it is the same as the Bookmarks menu. No way. This new function of Google Chrome also makes it possible to consult these tabs at a future time Without connection (if you will need internet to add addresses to the list). Before knowing how it works, let’s dig a little deeper into its essence.
Let’s put ourselves in situation. If you are on a very interesting page or someone sends you a link that you want to keep at all costs, until now we had a couple of options in Chrome. We can save that link with third-party applications and refer to it later. Or, there is the option to keep it in the browser through the Bookmarks menu. The problem is that this page will be mixed with the rest of the bookmarks and you will not be able to differentiate it. This is precisely what the reading list solves for.
This function is nothing more than a list of pages to read later. Also, once you have added a certain tab to your reading list, you can view the content offline. This is another advantage over the Bookmarks option.
The reading list also fulfills a dual function. And it is that it separates those pages that you have not read from those that you have already consulted. Therefore, you will not have to try to remember your queries. The pages read, however, will still be present in the menu and you can visit them as many times as you want. The list will simply remind you that you have already read them.
Once we have described the utilities provided by the Google Chrome reading list, we are going to detail how they work.
First of all, the reading list is most likely disabled in your browser. Therefore, you must activate it before proceeding to use it.
With the function activated, adding a specific address to the reading list is extremely easy.
If this does not happen, we just have to open another empty tab, click on the bookmarks bar with the right mouse button and select Show reading list. Then, the icon will appear on the right side of our bookmarks bar. One way to turn the bookmarks bar on or off is by using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + B.
With your reading list visible in the bar, you can now mark the pages you want to save to read at another time. Although you will need Internet access to save addresses, you will be able to consult your reading list offline.
The reading list is easily organized into two sections. The pages you have saved will be displayed under the title Unread. However, the moment you have consulted a certain page saved in this list, it will appear in the section Pages that you have read.
You will not have to do anything to make this happen. The pages will automatically change places the moment you consult them. And as we have pointed out, these will not be removed from the list. They will remain available in case you want to visit them at another time.
If for whatever reason you are no longer interested in having a page on the list, you can proceed to delete it. You just have to display the list and, next to the page, press the corresponding button Suppress. Thus, this address will disappear.
You can also manually organize the pages within the list. When you are over the address, press the button Mark as unread or vice versa. Thus, the pages will change their status to the section read or pending.
