Neither megapixels nor collaborations with major photography brands: the key point in mobile photography is image processing. The Google Pixel and the iPhone they are good proof of this, with sensors below their rivals, but results to match. OPPO, one of the companies that is doing the best in high-end photography, is preparing a big change in image processing, according to Chinese sources.
According to sources on Weibo, highly reliable, OPPO is developing its own ISP, an independent image signal processor mounted by manufacturers such as MediaTek or Qualcomm. We are going to tell you which manufacturers have already taken this step and why it is so important.
An IPS of your own for OPPO
According to Digital Chat Station, one of the most reputable leakers when it comes to Chinese brands, OPPO is already developing its own ISP, an image processor that we could see in the OPPO Find X4.
The ISP is the image processor mounted by mobile processors. For example, Qualcomm has its Qualcomm Spectra, and MediaTek its Imagiq. These processors are responsible for processing the image signal coming from the sensor, together with the processing algorithms designed by the brand itself.

As we could see, without going any further, in the comparison of the Samsung Galaxy S21, the same mobile can take different photos if it has a different ISP, as happened in this case because of the difference between Exynos and Qualcomm.
It is not the first time that a Chinese manufacturer relies on its own ISP. Xiaomi has already presented its Surge C1, a photographic coprocessor for the Xiaomi Mi Fold. OPPO wants to follow these steps now, creating your own ISP.
