Nvidia Shield TV will not update to Android 10 by not offering its users important changes

With Android TV 12 just around the corner We see how most manufacturers continue with Android TV 9.0, almost no one has updated to Android TV 10, and Nvidia is not going to be the exception.

Nvidia confirmed a few weeks ago through your forum, and in a very silent way, that their Shield TV and Shield TV Pro launched in 2019 will not update to Android 10. The company in its statement has explained the reasons of the decision.

Shield TV does not update to Android 10 because it hardly offers changes

When Google released Android 10 it didn’t pay much attention to its version for Android TV, and barely offered improvements. All were minimal changes that hardly brought news to a user, since basically what Google did was a minor update to Android TV 9.0. That is why manufacturers did not go to great lengths to update their televisions.

In the publication made by the Nvidia staff we can read precisely this reason with a message to reassure your customers:

SHIELD development is still in full swing, we just had a release not long ago. Android 10 was not working for Android TV, so we decided to skip it as the effort was great and there was no essential impact for end users other than the version string change. Beyond that, we didn’t talk about our roadmap in advance, but I can tell you that there is still a lot of development going on in SHIELD.

As we can see, that Nvidia does not update its Nvidia Shield to Android 10 does not mean that they will not receive new updates. Nvidia reports that Shield development continues apace as it has now, releasing a new update every few months, but at the moment the next updates cannot advance. Now we will have to wait to see if they jump from Android 9.0 to Android 11 or Android 12, since their latest models have

not even two years on the market, and Nvidia has been updating the first generation of their consoles for five years.
