New Dimensity 1100 and 1200: Can the best of MediaTek play in the big leagues? 1

MediaTek seems to have been relegated to second place for years, and it is that in Spain it has been associated with low and medium range mobiles despite having surpassed Qualcomm in units sold. Little by little we have seen how the Helio G ranges became very competent, and the company does not seem willing to throw in the towel.

In the wave of 5G devices, MediaTek’s Dimensity range seems ready to offer great performance without neglecting high-end technologies with its latest processors. Does MediaTek have what it takes to be among the best?

The new MediaTek Dimensity 1100 and 1200 are the best of MediaTek

Until a few months ago, the best mobile processors were made in a 7-nanometer manufacturing process. The manufacturing process indicates the size at which the internal components of a processor are manufactured. The smaller they are, the better, since they require less energy to operate and when they heat up less they can achieve higher power or lower consumption for the same performance.

Snapdragon 888Processors like the Snapdragon 888 are built on a 5 nanometer process.

The new generation of chips from Qualcomm and Samsung have given way to 5 nanometers, while the new MediaTek has lagged a bit behind as their new Dimensity is at 6 nanometers. Without going into the technical details, this means that while MediaTek is still one step behind the best, it has built its best chips with better technology than the best previous generation processors.

Now entering the field, the new MediaTek chips have an architecture with four Cortex A78 cores at 2.6 GHz (in the Dimensity 1200, one of these cores can go up to 3 GHz) and four Cortex A55 cores at 2 GHz. Again, MediaTek has used a high-end architecture with the Cortex A78s, but has not incorporated the very powerful Cortex X1.

Beyond the CPU, both processors feature Mali-G77 9-core graphics, a third-generation AI engine, and support for high-refresh rate displays, photos with sensors up to 200MP, and 4K video recording at 60 frames. per second.

One of the most curious aspects of the MediaTek Dimensity is the support for Raytracing, a technology that is giving a lot to talk about since it is included in the new generation consoles and high-end graphics cards such as the Nvidia RTX. MediaTek has added support for this futuristic technology in their processors, but you shouldn’t be too excited either. MediaTek has not included graphics processors with native support for this technology and current support is only at the software level, so performance and features are expected to be very poor. It is a great first step for MediaTek, but it is still far from being an added value of its processors.

At the level of technical characteristics, the new MediaTek chips are at a lower level than the very powerful Snapdragon 888 and Samsung Exynos 2100. However, at the level of architecture and manufacturing process they have everything necessary to compete against high-end chips cheaper, being great competition for the Exynos 1080 and Snapdragon 870.
