Microsoft makes it even easier to use WSL: it can now be downloaded in Windows 11 as one more application from the Microsoft Store

The arrival of Windows 11 has meant a change in Microsoft’s policy as far as developers and applications are concerned. The Microsoft Store is stronger or so they want from Microsoft and the last example is represented by the arrival of Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) in the form of an application for Windows 11.

Any user who is interested may download and install the Windows Subsystem for Linux Preview app from the Microsoft Store. Simply access this link and download the application, which makes it easy to use. A version that for now is still in the testing phase.

Easier to install and use

The downloadable version of Windows Subsystem for Linux Preview has the Linux kernel number 5.10.60.1. Through WSL, developers can run a GNU / Linux environment, including most command-line tools, utilities, and applications, directly on Windows, unmodified and without the overhead of a traditional virtual machine or a dual boot configuration.

An option that until now was one of the great attractions of Windows 10 and that now is also of Windows 11 and also facilitating that it can be installed more easily without having to access the “Enable or disable Windows features” dialog and restart the computer to enable either the WSL itself or the Virtual Machine Platform.

In order to take advantage of this new downloadable application, it will be necessary to use a computer with Windows 11. It is also a requirement have the optional component “Virtual Machine Platform” activated, something that can be achieved by entering PowerShell as administrator and typing dism.exe / online / enable-feature / featurename: VirtualMachinePlatform / all.
