5G mobiles have been a reality in Spain for a couple of years now. Despite that, it was not until recently that we have seen economic proposals that can make the use of this network begin to take off in 2021.
Still, the 5G we have in Spain is not the fastest 5G available. We use the sub 6 networks, not the mmWave which allows the spectacular speeds that we have seen in some tests.
Everything you need to know about 5G. SA, NSA, Sub 6, mmWave …Do you know what all the terms related to 5G mean? We tell you all about concepts like NSA, SA, Sub 6 or MIMO below.
Today the processor manufacturer Mediatek has presented its first 5G modem capable of using both technologies. It is the successor to the Mediatek M70 presented in 2018.
Mediatek M80 – a 5G mmWave compatible modem
This modem will allow manufacturers that use processors from this company to provide their terminals with 5G mmWave connectivity, which is currently the fastest. Of course, its stability will continue to be a problem in the short term, since it depends a lot on the position in which we are with respect to the antenna.
It will be in crowded environments when this technology shines by allowing the use of many more users simultaneously without falling speed. However, it seems that we will have to wait a few months hopefully to be able to experience these types of situations, given the current pandemic.
Ordago top speeds
According to the company, this M80 is capable of obtaining maximum download speeds of 7.67 Gbps, while in upload it is capable of reaching 3.76 Gbps.
As always, these figures must be taken with care since they are real tests, but carried out in laboratories under controlled and ideal conditions. Even so, if symmetric speeds of 1 Gbps are achieved, there will be enough difference with the current 5G, at least in most cases.
Mediatek will not limit this M80 to mobile devices, although it could use them on them, but will use it in other types of products, such as those used in the Internet of Things.
The entry Mediatek presents the M80, its first modem with dual 5G appears first in The Free Android.
