ISOCELL HM3: this is the sensor of the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra

Yesterday the new Galaxy S21 were presented in full, the first high-end that Samsung will launch in Spain this year. The Galaxy S21 Ultra is the top model in this range, which leaves us with a series of important new features, such as support for the S Pen, as well as a new 108 Mpx camera sensor.

The sensor used by the brand in this Galaxy S21 is the new Samsung ISOCELL HM3. It is a sensor that introduces a series of improvements at various levels, such as ISO or automatic focus, thus improving the sensor used last year and making it one of the strengths of this device.

We tested the Samsung Galaxy S21, S21 Plus and S21 Ultra: our opinion

We have been able to use the new Samsung phones for a few hours, the Samsung Galaxy S21, S21 Plus and S21 Ultra and we give you our opinion.

This new Samsung ISOCELL HM3 is a 0.8 micrometer sensor with a size of 1 / 1.33 ″, which are figures very similar to the sensor used in the previous generation of phones. It also makes use of nona-binning, the grouping of nine pixels to one, so that 12 Mpx photos are obtained when we are not shooting at full resolution with this Galaxy S21 Ultra.

Of course, Samsung has made improvements to this sensor, as a greater dynamic range, faster focus and the ability to capture sharper images every time. These are important improvements, because the sensor used in the S20 Ultra ran into certain problems, especially focusing.

Samsung seeks to avoid new focus problems, therefore, the sensor of this Galaxy S21 Ultra arrives with Super PD Plus. It is a new function that is responsible for improving phase detection focus (PDAF) by adding microlenses optimized for that automatic focus. In addition, the sensor also comes with improvements in its ISO, since it will make the frames act in the same way as with HDR, that is, combining frames with more ISO and with less ISO, to obtain a final image that has less noise.

Samsung also leaves us with a redesigned sensor, it will consume less energy, about 6.5% less, so that this Galaxy S21 Ultra should also have a somewhat lower power consumption at all times. It remains to be seen if this sensor is up to the task and the problems of last year’s S20 Ultra will be overcome.
