How to receive tips from your followers on Twitter with Tip Jar

One of the ways many tweeters seek financial compensation when their publications go viral is by publishing the link for donations from one of the payment gateways, with Tip Jar we will place the tip jar in a place that is visible to all.

When we publish content and it goes viral, whatever it may be: a narrative text, a dissemination essay, opinion article or any other support, we would like to receive some remuneration in the form of support and gratitude for the work done, right ? At the end of the day, we provide original and quality content to the users of the social network, the users benefit, the social network itself benefits … Why not benefit us? Until now we saw how viral tweets could be accompanied by PayPal links to accept donations. To give shape to these donations, last May Twitter has launched Tip Jar (The tip jar).

What is it

The tip jar is an icon that appears on the profile of Twitter users who have it activated. The purpose of this new social network tool is facilitate mutual support between creator profiles. It is a complementary way of showing support for creators of content that goes viral beyond likes and retweets.

It is intended that we can thank journalists, writers, new content creators and other users with a small financial contribution. The social network has created this application to act as an intermediary between users and payment or donation platforms, so that it will be necessary connect our Tip Jar to the payment account from any of the supported services.

Don’t worry if you don’t see your tip icon (circled bills) available. The service has recently been launched and starts with a trial period in which only a few users are chosen to be able to activate it. At the moment it is known that only some users chosen from the official mobile applications that have the social network installed in English will be able to activate it.

Price and commissions

It is a tool that allows you to connect payment gateways for donations with our profiles on the social network. As it does not intervene directly in monetary transactions there is no cost for neither party.

From the social network itself they insist that it is a totally free service except for the possible commissions that payment platforms could apply to whoever makes or receives the donation. These commissions, as we will see below, can vary significantly from 0% commission to 15%. It is likely that if this tool is well received, new payment or donation gateways will be connected and more competitive commissions or prices will be applied.

Where to send from: Available platforms

When you access a profile that has caught your attention and you see the donations icon, you can make a donation by clicking on it and choosing the service you want. Obviously, in order to give a donation, you must be registered in one of the services. At the time of launching the tool there are 6 services supported with Tip Jar from Twitter:

  • Cash.App: This payment and donation platform is also available on Android and iOS. This application offers debit card service, discounts on purchases, buying and selling in financial markets and cryptocurrencies. The commission for sending money from Cash.app is 3% if you do it with a charge to the card and 1.5%
if you make a standard transfer to a bank account.

  • Patreon: It is one of the platforms most used by content creators through which they generate extra income by creating special subscription plans with additional content. The commission plan for raising money may vary, but the cheapest plan (Lite) will discount a 5% of donations received through this system.

  • Venmo: This is a payment tool with a social network tinge. You can add to your contacts and post payment options for events, for example. Venmo does not charge commissions for payments made with origin and destination to an account of the platform. If the payment is made with a charge to the credit card, the commission will be 3%.

  • Bandcamp: this application is focused on singers and music producers but it can also be used to receive donations. In this case, Bandcamp applies a commission of fifteen% for income through digital platforms.
