Remote control

Remotely accessing another computer is especially useful in many cases. For example, if you are telecommuting and you need a technician to check something on your computer. For organizations or companies but also for individual users who want to access their work computer from home or vice versa. In those cases, we can install and configure a VNC server which will provide us with the possibility of accessing these devices remotely.

We explain you step by step how you can use or connect to a VNC server from your computer, what options does it allow you or what are the advantages of doing so.

What is VNC for

VNC is one of the most popular remote computer control tools used together with TeamViewer. VNC allows us to easily control a computer system from anywhere for free (for home use) so that we will always have access to our files and computer resources wherever we are, protecting access by means of a password. Basically, we can remotely access a server or another computer to control it, access the data or whatever we need. It is a remote control service such as connecting to a remote server. We explain how you can use it or configure it with VNC Connect from Real VNC.

Use a VNC server from Windows

Until a few years ago, using VNC with Real VNC was much more complex and required more knowledge and configuration, but today it is very basic and straightforward. Of course, you have to download two programs: VNC Connect on the computer you want to control and VNC Viewer on the computer you want to use to control. It will be enough to link both Using passwords and security methods and you will have full remote control.

Create an account

Once you have it, you will have to log in to activate the license. That will require you to have a Real VNC account first. The problem is that there is currently no free or free version, but all versions are paid. Luckily you can create a free 30-day trial and without the need to enter any type of credit card or payment method. It will automatically give you access. You need to have the account to later configure the VNC server on your computer so it is recommended that you do it first. Enter your email, your name and surname and your password.

VNC Connect

You will have to download the program on your computer and follow the different steps that will allow you to install it. Luckily, it is currently in Spanish so you will not have any kind of problem understanding what it asks of you or what you have to do. Go choosing the next steps and install it to be able to use it. When you have installed it you will have to access with username and password.

Install

Once you do, VNC will ask you for a password to prevent unauthorized remote access on this computer and that is at least six characters long and is not the same as the RealVNC account.

Password VNC

When you do, some data will appear:

  • Subscription type
  • Connectivity
  • Name of the team
  • Computers already integrated into the equipment
  • Name of the team in the group

Confirm with “Apply” and wait a few seconds. The process will have finished and you will be able to enter the program to see how it works. It is practically identical to Teamwiever in terms of functions so it will not be difficult for you to do so. You just have to activate it so that other members of your team “control” your computer remotely. When prompted, users who are going to connect to your computer must specify the VNC password.

Connect

If you want to exit, tap on the three lines in the upper right corner and choose “Stop VNC Server” so that it stops working until you decide.

Install VNC Viewer

You will need to install VNC Viewer to control the device remotely. You just have to go to the website and follow the previous steps: look for the corresponding operating system and download it to the computer from which you are going to have control. This will be the program that you must install from the computer that you are going to control. Download, follow the steps and install on your computer.

When you have successfully installed and opened it, four options will appear:

  • Access remote computers
  • Automatic detection
  • Backup and sync
  • Remember passwords

Start VNC

Once you accept, you can go to the main screen where you will have several options: configure one connection manually or login so that computers “on the team” are automatically added or discovered. That is, the computers that you have previously configured using the VNC “Server” option.

If you log in, you will receive a message in the email where it gives you the credentials to access that computer. We will give the authorization from the email in which the date and time, the equipment and the IP from which someone requests to access our computer are indicated. Tap on the email button and authorize the operation, as you can see in the attached screenshot.

Email confirmation

Once you’ve done it, from the VNC Viewer you will see the available equipment and just click on them to access and manage them.

Equipment

When you request to enter, you will notify the computer that you are going to control remotely. By accepting, it will ask you for the password to access that computer.

To access

Remember that this password is NOT the one you used to create the account, but rather the credentials to access the computer. Enter the password and you will automatically have control

Configure manually

Another option is to configure it manually:

  • Open File at the top left of the screen
  • Tap on “New connection”
  • Fill in the following information
    • VNC Server
    • Name
    • Tags
    • Security
    • Privacy
  • Choose “accept”

To consider

Keep in mind that this is a very simple way to manage a VNC server, but it is not the only one. Currently this option is paid and you can try it free for 30 days but then you will have to start paying. It is not the only program that you can use and there are others available such as UltraVNC, for example, that allows you to remote control with the same objective. In our case, we have made this tutorial for its ease of use and for being one of the classics.
