One of the tricks that many of us have used in the past to save battery life on a laptop has been disable automatic search for wireless networks through a specific switch that many teams incorporated. As technology has evolved, notebooks have become more energy efficient speaking.
But, not everyone has state-of-the-art equipment or you have the opportunity to renew it. If you have a veteran computer, which does not incorporate the option to disable Wi-Fi, below we show how you can save battery by disabling the automatic search for wireless networks.
Windows 10 is natively configured so that continually looking for Wi-Fi networks to connect to. This process, which takes place in the background, can consume a large amount of battery if we are not connected to a Wi-Fi network, so the best we can do is change the configuration from automatic to manual.
When changing the configuration from automatic to manual, our equipment will only search for Wi-Fi networks when we click on the icon that represents it. To carry out this process, we must follow the steps that I show you below.
- The first thing of all is to access Windows Services typing in Cortana’s search box “Services.msc” without the quotes and hitting Enter.
- Next, we look for the option Automatic WLAN configuration and click twice to access its properties.
- Next, in the section Service status, click on Stop.
- Finally, to change the search mode from Automatic to Manual, in the section Start type, click on the drop-down arrow and select Handbook. For the changes to take effect, click on Apply.
