How to calibrate the compass on Google Maps: all the ways

Google Maps is one of the most used applications in Spain. Thanks to this app we can navigate, locate places or even plan our trips in a safe and simple way. As with any other application on Android, there may be malfunctions in it on occasion. There is a problem that has happened to many: the compass works badly.

If the compass in Google Maps is wrong, we are going to have problems when navigating or looking for an address, because it is not going to do it correctly. Luckily, we can calibrate the compass in the app so that it will work fine again. To achieve this there are various methods.

Traditional method to calibrate compass on Google Maps

In Google Maps we have a classic way

to calibrate the compass in case it malfunctions, which is usually one of the most frequent problems in the application on Android. The origin of this problem may lie in the fact that some of the sensors used for the calculations are not working correctly and need you to calibrate them. The steps to calibrate it again are:

  1. Open the app on Android.
  2. Click on the blue circle that shows your location.
  3. Select the Calibrate Compass option at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Move the phone in a figure figure following the onscreen instructions (do this three times).
  5. Restart the app.

With augmented reality Live View

This summer a new method was introduced in the application with which to calibrate said compass, which we have already told you about. The way to do it is identical to the previous step, only now we are going to use Live View, the augmented reality of the app, so it is something that we can use while we are on the street, for example. The steps to calibrate the compass using this new method are as follows:

  1. Open Google Maps on Android.
  2. Click on the blue circle that shows your location.
  3. Select the Calibrate with Live View option.
  4. Click Start.
  5. Focus on buildings on the street until the app has located you.
  6. Restart the app.

From settings

The above are the traditional methods of calibrating the compass in the app. A common problem if the compass is not pointing in the right direction is that there is an option in the settings that is activated, which is to make the compass always point north. This makes the compass in the application always point in the same direction, preventing it from working correctly. The steps to follow to change this are:

  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. Tap on your profile picture.
  3. Go into Settings.
  4. Click on Navigation Settings.
  5. Look for the option Keep the map with north up.
  6. Activate this option.
