'Helvetica' and dozens of other documentaries that you can watch for free during the quarantine

In some countries we have already more than a week of quarantine, an exceptional measure which aims to try to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Many creators and platforms are being supportive, offering their services free of charge the situation is a little more bearable.

A few years ago you released ‘Helvetica‘, a documentary account the story of how a font was able to change the world. Its creator, Gary Hustwit, has decided to release it for free, so anyone can enjoy it.

Hustwit has announced that each week you will clear every one of their documentaries in your web page. In the case of ‘Helvetica’ is possible to activate the subtitles in Spanish, and today is the last day to be able to see it (which means that tomorrow we will have a new documentary on the same site).

Will have this page in favorites, at least during the quarantine period, as Hustwit has signed documentaries very interesting. Helvetica is part of what they call the “trilogy of design”that the complete ‘Objectified’ (about the design of objects) and ‘Urbanized‘(about the design of a city).

Personally, that I am most eager to see is ‘Rams’, a documentary released in 2018, which analyses across the work of Dieter Rams, one of the most influential designers of our era (something that can be seen clearly on Apple products).

Other documentaries free to make more bearable the quarantine

The International Documentary Film Festival of Amsterdam (IDFA) is the largest festival of documentary cinema of the world, and is held annually since 1988 in the capital of the Netherlands.

In your web page we can find dozens of films and documentales that we can enjoy for free, and it is possible to display them according to their length, country of production or subject matter.

Retina Latin it is a platform on which we can access to a large catalog of Latin american cinemais a public and free access for the citizens of Latin America and the Caribbean. Even if you don’t live in Latin america, almost 10% of its catalogue can be accessed from any part of the world.

Have a section dedicated exclusively to documentaries, and on the left side we can select the country in which they were produced. In addition, in the thumbnail with the poster already indicate to us the duration of each one.

We continue in Latin america. In 2013 they premiered ‘The death of Jaime Roldós’, a documentary directed by Lisandra Rivera and Manolo Sarmiento in analyzing the suspicious death of ecuadorian president Jaime Roldós. Its creators have decided to make it free on Vimeo:

‘Next Round’ is a documentary produced in Ecuador in 2018. We invite you to enter in one of the neighborhoods more conflicting of the country, place in which two teenagers struggling to get ahead under the guidance of his mentor (a former boxer with a dark past). We can see it for free on Vimeo:

In Spain, more specifically in Galicia, the page of Novo Cinema Galego

has created a collection with dozens of documentaries and films. Here we can find works by names as well known as Oliver Laxeone of the key figures in the european cinema today.

Although everything points to that there are quite a few days so that we can recover “normal”, thanks to the initiatives and platforms such as the ones described in this article may help make that wait a little shorter.
