Google wants quality in apps: create a new list of recommendations for developers

The world of applications is evolving rapidly, and what was good practice in the past may be disregarded. With a view to this, Google has created a entire section dedicated to improving the quality of apps in your developer page, and you plan to update it every quarter so it doesn’t easily get out of date.

In the words of Google, “user expectations have increased since the early days.” Developers must ensure that their apps not only work, but that they work well. To help make this happen, Google has deployed a updated list of recommendations to improve quality of applications.

Dubbed “Build Quality Apps,” Google has created a content hub on its developer site that is exclusively focused on quality. It is a list of recommendations in six sections, which will be updated every quarter. The version for the first quarter of 2021 is ready on your website.

Fortunately, the content is already translated into Spanish, and it details the different aspects that developers must take into account if they want to launch a quality app. Recommendations are classified in six categories: visual design, functionality, compatibility and performance, security, presence on Google Play and recommendations for games.

Each of these sections has a few dozen recommendations in this regard in different aspects. You can consult the entire list here, although these are some of the recommendations from said list:

• Apps larger than 10MB must be able to be installed on SD memory

• Notifications must not include advertising

• The app allows its use vertically and horizontally, when possible

• The app must be compatible with Doze and App Standby

• Graphics included must not be pixelated or distorted

• The app does not dynamically load content from outside of the app’s APK.

• Screenshots on Google Play do not include non-Android devices (such as an iPhone)

Also included is a list of test procedures so developers can do some basic checks to discover various problems in the app, such as trying to disconnect the network while using the app, closing and reopening it, and more.

Whether this initiative will mean an improvement in the quality of the applications that reach the Google store or not is something that remains to be seen. What it is is a good resource for developers who want to increase quality
