It’s official now. One of the most important manufacturers of sports watches and activity bracelets on the market has a new owner. Fitbit is already legally owned by Google.
In November 2019 Google announced the purchase of Fitbit for 2.1 billion dollars but until today, fourteen months later, they had not completed the acquisition. Rick Osterloh, Senior Vice President of Devices and Services, Google, has announced the closure of the operation. The absorption has already been completed.
The acquisition of Fitbit is Google’s best bet to get fully into the health and wellness device market after the acquisition of the watch department Wear OS by Fossil. Fitbit has been in the market for more than 10 years, managing to sell 100 million devices and achieve 28 million active users worldwide.
Google emphasizes that the acquisition of Fitbit has been made by devices, and not because of your customers’ data. Fitbit will maintain strict privacy and security guidelines and that Google will not use Fibit data to display ads.
When Google announced the purchase of Fitbit it reported that the acquisition was to improve Wear OS together with its partners. In today’s statement they report that the union of Google and Fitbit will generate mmore competition and make the next generation of devices better and more affordable.
Fitbit renewed its range of devices a few months ago with the launch of the new Fitbit Sense, Verse 3 and Inspire 2, so until the end of the year it is not expected to see the first sports device Google Fitbit.
