Google Chrome is slow on Android: How to fix it

It may be that sometimes it is the fault of the internet connection, but on other occasions we see that it costs him to load the pages even with good coverage. It is a constantly updated app with new functionalities and improving aspects related to performance, but even so it still has some fluidity problems.

Why is Google Chrome slow

If we are sure that it is not a connection problem, since we enjoy a good speed both in the Wi-Fi network and with mobile data, then we must begin to rule out other reasons.

One of the first and most common causes why a slow web loading in Chrome is due to the fact that the server where the web page is hosted has a problem. The server may have a hardware problem or just be saturated. The response in these cases usually occurs with a long delay, or even directly the response does not arrive from the server, showing the typical Error 404.

Another reason may be that Google Chrome is a fast browser, but it consumes many resources especially RAM. When we move to computers with limited or obsolete hardware, the loading speed will be greatly penalized. We see this very commonly on low-end Android mobile devices, where Chrome runs at a much lower speed.

How to make Google Chrome not slow on Android

Fortunately, we can put means to solve this problem that does not make it impossible to use the application on the mobile, but makes it more complicated. We can first choose clear cache of the app and of course, keep it updated, but we are going to go further. They are more drastic and advanced solutions.

Enable Basic Mode

This mode was initially launched with the idea of saving data when browsing, because it allows delaying the loading of multimedia elements on web pages, causing them to load as we slide down the page. This avoids that we have to wait for the page to load completely with all the elements, but rather that the load is more progressive. To activate it, you will need:

  1. Open Chrome on your phone.
  2. Press on the three upper vertical points.
  3. Access «Settings» and then «Advanced settings».
  4. Press in basic mode.
  5. Turn the switch to “Yes”.

Speed up Google Chrome by hardware

This is the case with the hardware acceleration, which allows you to make the most of the device, so in general we can get a better performance from the browser on Android. The means to achieve this greater use we need to navigate through the Google flags, those experimental options that the browser has. The steps to activate this function are:

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Enter chrome: // flags in the address bar.
  3. Find the option “hardware-accelerated video decode”.
  4. Activate this option.
  5. Restart the browser.

Enable preloading of the web page

It is a function with which the browser will be able to load the tabs of a faster and more predictively, so when you use it, the browser will load in advance the links that it thinks you could open. To activate this feature, you must do the following:

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Click on the three vertical dots at the top right.
  3. Enter «Settings».
  4. Go to «Privacy».
  5. Enter «Advanced settings».
  6. Find the option “Preload pages” and activate it.
