Google announces the closure of Android Things, the version for IoT devices

The Android operating system is available on many devices beyond mobiles. In televisions, there are Android TV, in the car, there Android Auto, smartwatches have (Android) Wear OS and Android Things was going to be the version for the Internet of Things or IoT. About five years after its launch, Google gives up on Android Things and will stop accepting new projects.

On the Android Things developer website, Google has clarified the roadmap for its operating system. As of January 5, 2021, no new non-commercial projects can be created and one year later, on January 5, 2022, the Android Things management console will be completely removed along with all your data.

The Android of things is little

Android Things was born in 2016 as an evolution of Project Brillo and with a clear objective: to be the version of Android for the Internet of Things: based on Android, but optimized to work on low power devices and with initial support for the Intel Edison, NXP Pico and Raspberry Pi 3.

The system never got too much traction, and early 2019 Google narrowed the focus: Android Things would focus on smart speaker and display devices, turning to its commercial use and moving away from becoming a project for any enthusiast that had some of the supported SoMs, such as the Raspberry Pi 3B.

About two years later, not even Google uses Android Things on its smart speakersSo it’s not too surprising that this version of Android has its days numbered. The Android Things Developer Console will stop supporting non-commercial projects as of January 5, 2021, and will be closed completely on January 5, 2022.

In practice, this boils down to developers with active projects using Android Things having one year to disconnect or find an alternative management and maintenance that does not depend on Google.
