Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S20: differences and price variations

For many years, mobile manufacturers have launched at least one terminal per year from each of their families. It is not always intended that we change the previous model for the current one, but they always try to reinforce the differentiation that the new terminals have with respect to their predecessors.

This is what we are going to analyze today by looking at the Galaxy S21 that were presented yesterday and the Galaxy S20 that were announced less than a year ago.

We have been able to test the three terminals from last year and, very briefly, also the three from this year.

In addition to the different main characteristics we are going to emphasize the price change.

Price differences between the Galaxy S20 and S21

If we look at the two lists that we put below, we will see how the S21 are cheaper than the Galaxy S20 were in 2019. The reason for this is that Samsung should not only fight with brands like Apple, but also with others like Xiaomi. In addition, even Apple has begun to lower the initial price of its phones with models like the iPhone SE.

In 2019 the cheapest S20 cost more than 900 euros and did not have 5G connectivity.

  • Samsung Galaxy S20
    • € 909 (4G / 128 GB / 8 GB RAM)
    • € 1009 (5G / 128 GB / 12 GB RAM)
  • Samsung Galaxy S20 +
    • € 1009 (4G / 128 GB / 8 GB RAM)
    • € 1109 (5G / 128 GB / 12 GB RAM)
    • € 1,259 (5G / 512 GB / 12 GB RAM)
  • Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra
    • € 1,339 (5G / 128 GB / 12 GB RAM)
    • € 1,559 (5G / 512GB / 16GB RAM)

In 2020 we see how the cheapest model, the S21, has 5G and also lowers the price by 50 euros compared to last year’s model. Then we will see how that is possible.

  • Samsung Galaxy S21
    • € 859 (128 GB / 8 GB RAM)
    • € 909 (128 GB / 8 GB RAM)
  • Samsung Galaxy S21 +
    • € 1059 (128 GB / 8 GB RAM)
    • € 1109 (256 GB / 8 GB RAM)
  • Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra
    • € 1,259 (128 GB / 12 GB RAM)
    • € 1309 (256 GB / 12 GB RAM)
    • € 1,439 (512 GB / 16 GB RAM)

What do we lose and win

Of course, if the terminals are cheaper instead of more expensive, we will have lost something along the way, because it is rare that a company wants to lose money or can adjust costs so much from one year to the next.

To begin with, we have to say that we have won in various aspects generally. Now we have 5G in all variants and larger batteries, which should give us greater autonomy.

The problem is that also we lose several things. In general, again, the memory expansion slot is lost, so internal storage is more important than ever. You also lose the ability to use Samsung Pay with magnetic stripe POS.

The screens of the S21 and S21 Plus are now FHD, not QHD, a very relevant step back from the S20 and S20 Plus. As if all this were not enough, the S21 uses a polycarbonate rear, not glass as it happens in the two superior models.

D`Oh

Finally, the retail box is much more concise since it includes the charging cable, but not the wall charger or the headphones that we did have in the 2019 models.

As you can see, Samsung has lowered the price of its mobiles but at the cost of making some sacrifices in their specifications, especially in the s21 and S21 Plus, and in the accessories that are included in the sales box.

The entry Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S20: differences and price variations appears first in The Free Android.
