Fix Windows not waking up from sleep with mouse and keyboard

To use Windows again from sleep mode, just press a key on the keyboard or move the mouse. However, there may be situations where both stop working and do not allow us to return from sleep mode, for which we will have to use the power button.

Causes of Mouse and Keyboard Not Working in Sleep Mode

In general, it is possible to return from Windows sleep mode using our keyboard or mouse in a simple way. Sometimes we may find that these do not work correctly once Windows is suspended, which prevents us from using it to resume activity. These problems are usually related to the power management of the USB that Windows performs or problems with the drivers of these.

In the event that the peripherals are not configured to be able to restore the PC, or that we have made modifications to the power plan that deactivates them. We must also verify that the power plan that we have selected does not disable these devices for use in sleep mode and that Windows does not close the USB ports. Similarly, a driver update or using the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter can help us fix the problem.

Keyboard and mouse do not respond when returning from sleep

Next, we are going to review some actions that we can carry out in the event that our keyboard and mouse stop working when we return from sleep mode.

Check that the peripherals can restore the PC

The first thing we must verify is that our USB devices are configured to allow the reactivation of Windows, since otherwise we cannot return from sleep mode using the keyboard or mouse. To do this we are going to press the command «Windows + R» with which we will access the command «Execute». Here we will write devmgmt.msc and click OK, with this we will enter the Device Manager.

Here we display the option “Mouse and other pointing devices” to show us the mouse that we have connected to the PC. We right-click and select “Properties”.

Subsequently we select the “Power Management” tab and check if the option “Allow this device to reactivate the computer” is enabled or not. If not, we mark the box and click OK to save the changes.

In the case of the keyboard, we will display the «Keyboards» section and we will carry out the same steps. Keep in mind that some computers, especially laptops, do not allow you to return from sleep mode using the keyboard, so the Power Management option may not appear.

Update keyboard and mouse drivers

Sometimes the problems caused with the mouse and keyboard can be caused by having outdated drivers, so it would be advisable to keep them updated. Next, we are going to press the Windows + R command with which we will access the Run command. Here we will write devmgmt.msc and click OK, with this we will enter the Device Manager.

We expanded the options for “Keyboards” and

“Mice and other pointing devices.” Right-click on the keyboard or mouse and click on «Update driver». This will cause a window to appear where we must select Search for drivers automatically, so that Windows will take care of searching for and installing the latest drivers.

Check that Windows does not close the USB ports

The problem may be caused by the PC reducing power to the USB ports after Windows goes into sleep mode, preventing signal from reaching the mouse and keyboard. For this, from the Device administrator We expanded the option of “Universal Serial Bus Controllers”. We double click on each of them and access the “Power Management” tab. In each one of them we disable the “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save energy” box.

Reset power options settings

Another option we can try is to reset the power options settings. For this we write cmd in the search box of the Start menu and execute the Symbol of the system with administrator rights. Once it appears we write the following command and press Enter:

powercfg -restoredefaultschemes

We wait until the command is executed and then we close the command prompt. This will reset the power options, so if we have made any modification that prevented using the keyboard or mouse in sleep mode, it will be disabled and we can use it again.

Check the PC power plan

We can also check the power plan established in the computer. For this we write control panell in the search box of the Start menu. Subsequently we select “Power options” and “Change plan settings”, within the plan that we have selected. On the next screen we select “Change advanced power settings” which will open a new window.

In this new window we expand the “USB Configuration” and then the “USB Selective Suspension Configuration”. Here we must change the options to “Disabled” and press OK. This will prevent the system from turning off the USB ports to save power and may prevent us from being able to wake up from sleep using the keyboard or mouse.

Use the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter

With the keyboard and mouse connected, we must choose to run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter to see if it can help us solve the problem. This is something that we must do from the Command Prompt. To do this we must write cmd in the search box of the Start menu and select the Command Prompt by running it as administrator. Next, we enter the following command and press Enter:

msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic

This will start the hardware and device troubleshooter in Windows 10, so we need to let it finish and take care of fixing any problems it might encounter.
