Facebook is targeting video game streaming with a weird strategy

Games in the cloud have already arrived in Spain thanks to services such as Nvidia GeForce NOW, Google Stadia and Microsoft Xbox Game Pass. All these services are available for Android, but in this new wave it seems that all the big tech companies want to be present.

A few days ago we knew how Amazon was betting in style with Luna, and now it is Facebook’s turn. Those of Mark Zuckerberg do not want to miss the future of gaming, and for this they have decided to also bet on the game in the cloud. Mind you, not in the way you thought.

Betting on Facebook’s cloud game

When you play a video game, it is usual to do it on a console, computer or even smartphone, but usually it runs on your own device. With the evolution of technology, the concept of cloud gaming has emerged, which means that instead of your computer running the game, it is processed on a remote server and displayed on your mobile screen, television or virtually any device.

Among its advantages, the game in the cloud allows you to play your favorite games anywhere, without losing progress and with the maximum possible performance, regardless of the device you are playing on. Nvidia, Amazon and Google use high-end computers, Microsoft their own Xbox and Facebook decides to bet on streaming in a somewhat peculiar way.

Facebook has decided to integrate its streaming platform into the Facebook application and website. In the games tab itself, you will begin to enjoy more powerful games than you could access until now, but far from betting on big blockbusters, Zuckerberg’s strategy is much more modest, with simple and free games. According to the company itself:

«Our first group of games available this week includesAsphalt 9: Legendsfrom Gameloft;Mobile Legends: Adventurefrom Moonton;PGA TOUR Golf Shootoutfrom Concrete Software, Inc .; YSolitaire: Arthur’s Talefrom Qublix Games. In the coming weeks, we will addDirt Bike Unchained from Red Bull, and we will continue to test new experiences and expand the number, types and genres of our video game library. “

And why will they do it like this?

Instead of betting on the best games in the industry, Facebook has decided to start with mobile games that you could possibly already play on your mobile, a movement that, seeing the rest of the industry players, is strange. However, the company itself has decided to explain why they wanted to do it like this:

  1. They do not want to make exaggerated promises that later they will not be able to fulfill: On Facebook they believe that the future of gaming is in the cloud, but that the technology is not yet polished enough to make big bets.
  2. They are not intended to replace your current hardware, consoles or mobiles.
  3. They start with what they already know how to do: The company assumes that their specialty is in free games, and they have considered this their starting point.
  4. It is not a separate service, but is part of the current Facebook gaming platform, with more than 380 million monthly players.
  5. They will not work with iOS at the moment, only on Android and the web.

These games will begin to be available in the application itself, within the games section, and although the strategy is strange, we will have to see how it evolves over the months.
