Connected but no internet, how to fix it in Windows 10?

That you are connected to WiFi does not mean that you have Internet. In fact, it is very common to find this problem: we are connected by WiFi but we do not have Internet in Windows 10. There may be many causes that make you unable to navigate even though everything appears perfectly connected, that your pages do not load.

Although there are still users who are connected to their home router by cable, the vast majority make use of WiFi technology to connect to the Internet from the computer for convenience and thus not have to run cable throughout the house. If you are a user of Windows 10, you may have encountered some problems at certain times to get your PC to recognize the WiFi in your home or to connect to it and we have already seen how to try to solve it.

Is being connected the same as having the Internet?

Have WiFi it does not imply that you have internet. Is different. WiFi allows us to connect wirelessly between a device and the router, it is the connection between the two and that it works means that the connection has been made correctly. But that there are two well-linked devices does not imply that you will have Internet. The LAN you are going to access may not work …

The WiFi connection of your devices to the router allows you to form a Local Network or LAN. They all use the wireless connection to create that “network” between devices and the router. But the local network is useless if you are not connected to the Internet because there is a failure in the operator, whye your service provider is down, because the router is not working or any other reason. That is why we usually find the problem of connected but without Internet in Windows 10.

Network troubleshooter

One of the most recommended options is to let Windows discover what is happening. And we can do this from the network troubleshooter that is capable of diagnosing and fixing what happens.

  • Go to Start on the Windows icon on your desktop
  • Open the Settings section
  • Select the Network and Internet section
  • Go to “Status” in the menu on the left side of the window
  • Find the section “Advanced network settings”
  • Choose “Network troubleshooter

Once here, a window will open explaining that it is scanning for possible problems. You can choose between the network adapters you want diagnose if you have multiple (Bluetooth, WiFi …) or mark them all. Tap on “Next” and follow the steps that I indicate to solve the problem.

Network adapter configuration

We can go to the computer configuration to change the adapter options and ensure that everything is marked correctly …

  • Open the Start section of your Windows computer
  • Go to Settings
  • Choose the “Network and Internet” section and tap on it
  • You will see the Status of the network
  • Scroll and you will find: Change adapter options
  • The folder of network connections with which you have will open
  • Choose the one you want
  • Right click on it
  • Open the section of “Properties”

Once we are in properties we will see “This connection uses the following elements” and a list in which we will see that there are boxes marked and unmarked. One of the things we must do is make sure that we have specific options marked:

  • Client for Microsoft networks
  • File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
  • QoS packet scheduler
  • Layer Topology Discovery Responder
  • Topology Discovery Mapper I / O Controller
  • Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP / IpV4)
  • Internet Protocol version 6 (TCP / IPv6)

Check all this. If that doesn’t work, follow the other steps we’ve compiled here to further troubleshoot the connection problem.

DNS cache release

As explained from Microsoft’s own help page, one of the steps we can follow to solve the problem is to carry out the DNS cache release and resetting connection sockets. We can do it from the Command Prompt by writing specific commands and with a subsequent restart. What we should do is:

  • Press the keys Windows + X to open Command Prompt
  • The CMD console on your computer
  • Write the following commands
    • netsh winsock reset
    • netsh int ip reset
    • ipconfig / reread
    • ipconfig / renew
    • ipconfig / flushdns
  • Restart the computer

Check if the WiFi no internet problem has already been fixed.

Modify DNS

DNS or Domain Name System They can also influence being connected to WiFi but without Internet. By default it is assigned but we can modify them by following a few simple steps and using another DNS.

  • Open Settings on your Windows computer
  • Go to the Network and Internet section
  • Tap on “Network and Sharing Center”
  • On the left, choose “Change adapter settings”
  • You will see the different connections, choose “WiFi”
  • Right click and choose the option “Properties”In the drop-down
  • Look for the option “Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP / IPv4)
  • Double click to open properties
  • At the bottom, choose “Use the following DNS server addresses”

Once you’ve checked this option instead of letting it fetch automatically, enter your preferred and alternate DNS server, depending on which one you’ve decided to use. For example, Google’s:

  • 8.8.8.8
  • 8.8.4.4

When you have filled in both fields, confirm with Accept “

Drivers update

One of the factors that can affect the fact that you do not have Internet on your computer is that the drivers used are not up to date. In that case, you should look for them through the support page of each of the drivers (you will have to go to another computer if you don’t have Internet on yours, of course) and look for the “Download drivers or software” section. From here, choose the model of your computer, download and install.

You can also do it from the section “Adapters from netSearching for the WiFi driver.

  • Go to the start menu
  • Type “Device Manager”
  • The drivers window will open
  • Look in the menu “Network adapters”
  • Open this section
  • Find the one corresponding to the WiFi controller
  • Right click
  • Choose “Update driver”

Network reset

If all of the above does not work, you can do a network reset in Windows 10 to remove and reinstall all adapters, return to the initial configuration and disable software such as VPN that may be causing you to have WiFi but do not have Internet.

  • Open Settings on your Windows computer
  • Go to the Network and Internet section
  • Make sure you are in the sectionor “State”
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page
  • Seeks “Network reset”

You will see all the information about what this process entails and confirm with “Reset now”. The computer will restart and after a few seconds it will turn on again. Check now if the Internet is already working.

Other solutions to consider

Although it is not an elaborate solution, it is usually a good resource that works when your Internet is not working well. It may be overly obvious but it will take you a few seconds to check. Check that all the lights are on (especially the Internet), that all cables are correctly plugged in and that we are close enough to it.

Restart the router. Turn off, unplug. Leave twenty seconds off and turn on again after this time. It will not solve all the problems but it can be of help if the problem is in this device.

In addition, it may not be your computer’s fault, but rather that there is a failure in your operator or that a temporary service outage is occurring that will be solved after a while. In that case, you have no choice but to wait.
