Change the OneDrive folder location in Windows 10

Microsoft’s cloud storage service, OneDrive, is very useful to save all your photos, music or work documents (and if you also want backup copies). And you do not have to pay anything for this service, it is completely free in its basic mode (5 GB). If you need more gigs, you must pay.

OneDrive makes it so easy share and transfer documents and, in addition, it automatically synchronizes them to open them on any of your devices just as you left them the last time you opened them. Another of its great advantages is that, if your tablet breaks, for example, you can recover the files saved on it that you have uploaded to OneDrive.

To access OneDrive, just create an Outlook account. Or if you have Windows 10 on your PC, it is already installed. Also, of course, with an Office 365 subscription. You can enter it from the web browser, from your computer, through the mobile phone app (it is compatible with iOS, macOS and Android) or with your Xbox.

Set up OneDrive in Windows 10 It has no mystery: you type OneDrive in the Start window, open it, and a window appears for you to enter your account information and click on Sign in. It gives you the option to change the location of the OneDrive folder that is synced with your PC. If you want to modify the default route, you just have to click on the Change option.

Change the default location

OneDrive files are stored in a specific folder by default, but if you want them to be stored in another, follow these steps:

1. You type OneDrive in the Start window
2. You select the OneDrive application (with a little blue cloud)
3. You press the right button and a window opens
4. Choose Settings
5. A new window will open with tabs at the top
6. Select the Account tab.
7. Click on the link that says “Unlink account” and another window will open.
8. Enter your Outlook email address and you will be signed in.
9. Select »This is your OneDrive folder»
10. Tap on «Change Location»

Before continuing with this wizard, to avoid having to download the data again we must move the folder that we have used for the cloud so far (which by default will be in the path C: / Users / xxxx / OneDrive (changing xxxx for our name of user)) to the path that we are going to use from now on, for example, in D: /, the second hard disk. Once the folder has been moved (it is an optional step, but this way we will avoid downloading the files again and free up the occupied space) we return to the previous window and log in to the client again.

Once done, you choose the new folder or path where you want all the files to be saved from now on.

1. Choose the files you want to be synchronized with the PC
2. Click Next and it will sync.

In the browser that appears, we must choose the new OneDrive path, the path where we have moved the folder before (or where we are going to download all the files again). In the event that the folder already exists, a window will appear with a warning that we must accept so that the files from the folder and from the cloud are merged.

If you left folders unsynchronized, once it is complete you will have to do it again. This time you should go to the Windows 10 taskbar (it’s at the bottom of the screen). If this does not appear, click on the arrow Show hidden icons.

4. Open the Account tab
5. From there, tap on Choose folders
6. Under Sync OneDrive files on this computer
7. Uncheck the folders you don’t want to sync
8. Confirm with “Accept”

Save space with Files on Demand feature

The function called Files on Demand avoids allowing save space on your PC or Windows 10 phone, since activating it will only download the files you choose. Or what is the same, when you do it yourself manually: you select the file from its OneDrive folder, double-click it, then download and open it.

How to enable OneDrive Files on Demand feature

To obtain this functionality, you must activate this option. For it:

1. Click on the cloud icon (white or blue) on the Windows taskbar
2. In this window, click on the Settings and help gear icon.
3. Select the Settings tab.
4. Go to the Files section on request
5. Check the option Save space and download the files when you use them
6. Confirm with “Accept”

You will know that you have done well if in the File Explorer you see some icons in the shape of a cloud in the files that are only online. Of course, these files are only accessible when you are connected.

Share OneDrive files from Windows 10

Sharing OneDrive files on Windows 10 with other users is pretty easy. You put the cursor over the file you have from Windows Explorer (you will recognize them by the little cloud), you give the right button and choose Share. It allows you to invite them through a link or with an email address. If you want the other person to edit it, it is also possible. If you prefer, you can also share it using an email address.

This will open a window in which we will have to configure the sharing options. The first aspect is that we can choose that anyone with the link can edit or choose to remove that permission. We can also establish a expiration date from which you will not be able to edit anything and even establish a password for more security. Once that is configured, we have to choose between adding people by email or copying the link to pass it through the system we want. The third way is to choose an application to share through it the link or link to the file in question.
