One of the most noticeable upheavals of this summer has been that of the small number of computers compatible with Windows 11 due to very strict requirements that left out even well-known models of the Surface range. Already in June we saw how these requirements could be smoothed and now Asus is testing BIOS changes to bring Windows 11 to older computers.
It was at the end of August how Microsoft released the updated requirements list computers must meet to be compatible with Windows 11. A list that included older 7th generation Intel Core processors and now Asus is testing for bring Windows 11 to even older components.
Windows 11 on 6th and 7th Gen Intel
Among the compatible Intel processors in the latest Microsoft list there are models such as the Core i5-7640X, Core i7-7740X, Core i7-7800X, Core i7-7820HQ, Core i7-7820X, Core i7-7900X, Core i7-7920X, Core i9-7940X, Core i9-7960X and Core i9-7980XE. Models that in addition to 8th generation and later processors that they are capable of running Windows 11 officially.
A lot of equipment is left out … something that may change if the Asus experiment comes to fruition. The company is testing BIOS updates that allow to extend support to some motherboards that use Intel processors even older than those required by Microsoft.
Let’s remember that Microsoft said yes, that unsupported computers could use Windows 11 but with performance issues and missing updates. That is why this movement of Asus draws attention, a company that already had a list of compatible boards which can be seen enlarged.

With the BIOS update, Asus tests motherboards with 6th and 7th generation Intel processors older ones can use Windows 11. This is the case with several Z270 motherboards for 6th and 7th generation Intel processors, which are not included in the official CPU specification documentation published by Microsoft.
Asus has confirmed support for Windows 11 in the changelog of the BIOS FORMULA ROG MAXIMUS IX, changes that can be read in the support page as well as in the BIOS in ROG STRIX Z270F GAMING.

In this way Windows 11 could reach Intel 7th generation (Kaby Lake) and 6th generation (Skylake) processors on some Asus boards.
