Android has a complicated relationship with themes: they are present in various layers of customization, but irregularly shaped. The only thing that all Android phones agree on, and only for a couple of versions, is the light theme and the dark theme, but this could switch with next version of Android.
According 9to5Google, Google is preparing a theme system as an extension of the (few) customization options that Pixels have from Android 10. It would be possible choose colors used in apps who decide to take advantage of this possibility.

According to information reviewed by 9to5Google, Google is working on a native theme system for Android. With him, it would be possible choose a primary color and an accent color, which would apply to various elements of the interface. Until now, the Google Pixels allowed you to choose from a handful of accent colors, which were applied to a few elements of the interface itself.
The main difference is that these colors would be available to be used by other applications, although not necessarily, as with other theme systems. It would be the application developers themselves who should activate whether they want the app to follow the system’s color schemes or not.
This has the advantage that the applications that support these color themes should be well prepared for it, avoiding display errors such as texts with little contrast as the background. In return, it is foreseeable that take a long time for most applications to adapt to support these issues.
In addition to being able to choose between some colors, it would also be possible for Android will automatically select colors based on the wallpaper that you have activated. At the moment there is nothing confirmed, and there is always the possibility that it remains in the pipeline before Android 12 sees the light.
