Android 12 layout reaches older versions: ‘Material You’ on Android 9 Pie’s Google keyboard

Android 12 it is now about to be released for all users. After all the process of previews and betas, right now we are in the fourth beta and half a step from the RC version, the one that precedes the definitive release for manufacturers to adapt it to their layers and offer the update to all their users.

One of the biggest changes that Android 12 introduces is ‘Material You’, its new adaptive design pattern that also fits into Google’s proprietary apps. But it seems that This ‘Material You’ will not be exclusive to Android 12, at least not when it comes to Google apps. Some traces have already been sighted even in Android 9 Pie, the latest version of Android with a dessert as a surname.

As we have said, the operating system sets the guidelines to follow and the apps of the system, the ones owned by Google, are adapted to the system in question. In this case, it is Android 12 that introduces the new design language ‘Material You’, the one that will probably only stay in the system and does not run backwards, although It does not seem that the same is happening with the aforementioned system apps.

Although Android 12 has not yet been officially released, we already have beta versions circulating and some apps are already adapted to the new design. One of them is Gboard, Google’s proprietary keyboard for Android, and now the new design has been (partially) sighted in older versions of the system. For instance, on Xiaomi and Sony phones that have Android 9 installed, two versions less than the current one and three less than the future Android 12.

Although the full design of ‘Material You’ probably won’t run backwards, yes we can see some parts in changes in the apps of previous versions. We have the new design for the top bar, the rounded corners for the keyboard and some new colors, plus the occasional icon. We do not have a complete redesign of the app but we do have brushstrokes of Android 12 going through the history of the operating system backwards.
