Amazfit Bip U review: lightweight, cheap and full-featured 1

Amazfit has tightened the accelerator of product creation in 2020 and, although it continues to collaborate with Xiaomi to launch some devices under its brand, it is in its own product line where we see more news.

One of the last was the Amazfit Bip U, a watch that was presented in mid-October, and we already knew that it would arrive in Spain.

Design and materials

Amazfit has several lines of smartwatches and smartbands in its catalog. The Bip are usually the cheapest watches, which opt for a more casual and youthful design. The Amazfit Bip U It’s a good example.

We have a square box with somewhat large frames, especially at the bottom, where even the brand’s logo fits, although not in a particularly visible way, which is appreciated.

On the right side we have the only button available, which is used to open the list of applications, although it would be better to say functions, since we do not have an app store. If we leave it pressed we can execute the task we want.

What has caught my attention the most about the watch is that the weight is really low, it barely exceeds 30 grams, and it shows a lot. Or rather, it is not noticeable.

We must also talk about the strap, made of silicone, but with a somewhat basic touch, and that gives a feeling of being too simple. However, we were not expecting a leather strap either, it would not make sense. In addition, as we can easily change it to a generic one, we do not see any problem here.

Something similar happens with the case of the watch, which being plastic to the touch gives a feeling of cheap product, but of course, it is a way of controlling the price and not increasing the weight.

All expected features

The most positive part of this watch comes from the hand of the functions since the Amazfit Bip U is capable of rivaling much more expensive watches. We can perform automatic sleep measurement, heart rate measurement and even blood oxygen saturation measurement, something that until recently was only seen in watches of higher categories.

We can also control the camera app, using the remote shutter clock, and as a multimedia control for music and podcasts.

Among the most curious functions is that of tasks, which allows you to put a list in the Android application, called Zepp. The point is that we cannot consult them from the clock. That would be perfect if we are going to be doing things and we don’t want to look at the list on the phone.

There is also a built-in function to track the menstrual cycle, perfect for women, and another to control stress. In case we are too nervous we can do breathing exercises with another of the integrated functions.

The only thing that I personally have missed is being able to speak through the watch, but that is still rare to see in watches of this price. That and that all the emojis appeared well on the screen, but some of them were not recognized by the system in the notifications.

Changing the screen technology on the Amazfit Bip U

One of the biggest changes we have seen in the Amazfit Bip U is its screen. The first models used a transflective screen that improved its visibility in the sun, the opposite of what happens to mobile phones.

In this case Amazfit has opted for an LCD screen that we have to recognize, it looks very good under direct sunlight. Obviously it is not the same as in other Bip, but it is not at all an impediment to use it outdoors.

And we are not talking about using it with maximum brightness, it is not always necessary. But if we want to, we can give it an extra visibility by adjusting this parameter.

Autonomy

The autonomy of this model is not as high as seen in smart bracelets, but given that the screen is much larger, it was to be expected. Still, we reached the 10 days of normal use, with notifications and alerts for active calls, as well as alarms and the timeout of the screen on at the maximum, 15 seconds.

There are two parameters that can affect autonomy, although not much. One is the screen, from which we can change the on time and brightness. The other is the intensity of the vibration, which for my taste is too strong in both the medium and the upper level, so I have placed it in the lowest of the three.

Amazfit Bip U: conclusion

Amazfit Bip U review: lightweight, cheap and full-featured 8

Amazfit has launched a particularly round product in the functions section, since it has nothing to envy its competitors.

The design is as expected for this family of watches and the price when it goes on sale in December will be adjusted, 59.90 euros in Spain. Where belonging to an economic range is appreciated is in the materials, very far from those used, for example, in the Zepp E with which it shares a form factor, but is also far in price.

Of course, there are proposals from other brands with much higher prices that, after sales and discounts, are placed in the same range as the Bip U. Those are the ones that can be a problem for the company.

As a product, the Amazfit Bip U is perfect to be a first watch, to give as a gift and not to be obsessed with giving it a bang.
