How to edit videos with VSCO on Android

VSCO is one of the best and most popular photo retouching apps. A 4.5 star rating out of 5 and more than 50 million downloads seem to back it up, and its last update on September 10 brings news at the video level for devices with Android inside.

While iOS devices they already had video-level possibilities with VSCO since 2017, the new update for Android comes to incorporate this section, allowing us to edit videos from the application. It is therefore appropriate to comment on how this function works, and how we can make the most of it to create videos with that peculiar look that VSCO provides to images.

Editing Videos with VSCO

When updating the application on Android, we will see the new video mode.

VSCO has a ‘Videos’ section, right next to the classic ‘Images’ section. Through this section we can edit the videos in a similar way to what we do with photographs, although There are some differences when dealing with content.

The VSCO editor allows us to import videos from the gallery to edit them, but not to record from the application itself

Within the aforementioned video section, we only have select the content we want (We can only choose one video, not mount several), and click ‘edit video’.

The VSCO video editor is very similar to the photo editor.

Here we will access the editor, practically identical to the one we have to edit photos. When we open it, we will be in the ‘All presets’ submenu, where we will have several filters to apply to our video. If we click on the filter, we will have three options.

Intensity: amount of filter applied
Character: play with the video contrast
Warmth: play with the temperature of the video

In the settings section, we can play with practically the same settings as in image, something that allows us to edit the video in detail. Specific, this is what we can modify.

Tone
White balance
Skin tone
Discoloration
Split tone
HSL

The settings are applied as if we were editing a photo, which makes the process quite simple. It also draws attention how well tools like ‘skin tone work’‘, which detects this tone even when the subject is moving.

The next section that we find next to the editing settings has to do with custom formulas. In other words, they are presets that we can create, so we don’t always have to edit videos from scratch. Just click on ‘create formula’ for it to be generated automatically, with the settings that we have used in editing.

When saving the video, rendering time will depend on your phone. In our case, with a mid-range mobile (Xiaomi Mi 9T), it took about 20 seconds for an 18 second video, which is not bad at all.

The only “downside” that the video editing mode for Android has in VSCO is that, as in its version for iOS, it is only available if we use the paid subscription, which rises from 20 euros a year. However, we can test this tool, as well as unlock all filters for free with the one-week trial they offer.
