Tobias Bernard, one of the designers that works in Purism to make that GNOME is ready for mobile devices, specifically for the Librem 5, has recently shared a long series of sketches, experimental a new mobile interface for GNOME that would look for the convergence and that looks pretty cool.
For those who don’t know anything beyond mobile with Android or iPhone, perhaps it is a good time to remember such initiatives as the PinePhone and the Librem 5. Both are niche products geared to those looking for privacy and control, and that have in common that they use Linux-based systems, distributions such as those we are accustomed to use in the computer, but adapted to the mobile.
Here he highlights especially the work of Purism with PureOSthe system that gives life to the Librem 5 and that it can also be used in the computer as a distro more. Now, on the side mobile, Purism has been working especially with its library Libhandy to give a user interface converging to the majority of applications officers of GNOME.
Mobile shell
Libhandy was the start, but Tobias, as Purism, and the development team of GNOME have plans to make one more step forward to transform the interface of the desktop environment in the future.
What we can see in the official repositories of GNOME in Gitlab, under the label “Mobile shell”. A series of mockups qualified to be “very experimental” and that we show from a launcher of applications to a mobile keyboard, going by the new structure of the shelland many more interesting things.
Now, while it is clear that by “very experimental” it is difficult that we get to see this or exactly this in future versions of GNOME, especially the immediate, TuxPhones we have found that internal sources say that GNOME is already discussing and planning to make it a reality.
Could take years for all this transition is complete, we could see a GNOME 4but it is not a small company, but one that is quite promising.
